Kai93Frei18 May 2024 19:53Hi, I bought a house from 1907.
I’m unsure about the bathroom: we leveled the wooden joists on the floor (1st floor) and plan to install OSB boards directly on top, possibly followed by Fermacell boards. Up to this point, there is no membrane or anything similar. I don’t know if a shower waterproofing membrane (sometimes called “elephant skin”) is enough to make everything 100% watertight. Thanks for any helpful advice.

Hello,
Are you sure about this? A bathroom on a wooden joist ceiling, especially the floor construction, requires careful planning and precise execution.
I would recommend having the waterproofing done by a professional, in our case a tiler. We installed a decoupling mat from Schlüter onto the dry screed, which absorbs the vibrations of the wooden joist ceiling and also functions as waterproofing.
The remaining waterproofing was done with a sealing kit from Ottoflex – sealing tape along the wall connections and shower tray including internal and external corners, waterproof membrane in the shower and wash areas, and liquid waterproofing beneath the shower tray.
Good luck!
