Hello,
Since our builder does not charge extra whether we choose a tiled shower or a shower tray, we are now considering what to install in our children's bathroom. Is it possible to waterproof a tiled shower floor with a glass enclosure just as effectively as a shower tray (where the surface the shower enclosure rests on is level)? Do tiled showers require more cleaning on the floor? We are also wondering if a patterned glass enclosure might be easier to maintain, as limescale is less visible. A clear glass enclosure probably needs to be squeegeed after every use, which my children definitely would not do. What do you think?
Best regards,
Sabine

Good morning,
I would say that a tiled shower is generally easier to keep clean—you just open the door, wipe it down, and you’re done.
Regarding the partition, where exactly would the difference be? Both are sealed with silicone, and a waterproof membrane is applied under the tiles anyway.
On the topic of limescale/wiping:
To prevent limescale, we decided to install a water softener system. Although it’s a bit of an investment, I see the added value in many areas (washing machine, dishwasher, coffee maker, shower enclosure).
At least encourage them to wipe down the surfaces—problem areas are the residues on the sides and the water on the silicone joints.

We will also choose a level-access shower base. I am simply not a fan of tiled showers; I don’t like them and I find tiled showers less hygienic because of the grout lines. I know this is not universally true, but that’s my feeling. To me, it feels a bit like a swimming pool floor. As you can see, tastes vary, and neither option probably has any major advantages or disadvantages. In the end, it comes down to personal preference.
