ᐅ Adding Furniture Casters to Kallax Units Later – Are They Stable?

Hello everyone,

I am considering attaching furniture casters to my already assembled Kallax shelf to make it easier to move around the room. My main question is: How stable is this solution really?

Can you estimate whether the casters will make the shelf very wobbly or even affect its load-bearing capacity? I’m concerned that adding casters might reduce the shelf’s safety, especially when storing heavy items inside.

Which type of casters are best suited (with locking brakes, large or small wheels), and what is the ideal way to attach them without damaging the material?

Are there any practical tips or important points to consider, especially when the furniture is already fully assembled?

Thanks for your advice!

Thanks for the information. That makes the role of the load easier to understand.

A small note about the weight: 40 kg (88 lbs) plus books can definitely create a dynamic load if you push it with some momentum.

Therefore, I strongly recommend using the wheel lock brake. Even better: if you can reinforce the structure with metal components—such as additional brackets or supports at the load-bearing points—that would be safer.

If you don’t want to use metal, at least use thicker, longer screws with pre-drilling to protect the wood.

Quick update: I have now decided to go with 50mm (2 inch) caster wheels with locking brakes and metal brackets. I will definitely pre-drill the holes.

Thank you very much for your detailed advice; it really helped me better assess the stability and avoid potential risks.

I’m curious to see how it holds up later and will share my experience again.

Great that you chose 50mm (2 inches) casters – in my opinion, they offer the best balance between stability and ease of movement.

With the metal brackets and pre-drilled holes, you’ve picked a sensible assembly method. 😉

Enjoy your remodeling—Kallax on casters really adds practical flexibility. If the shelf ever wobbles, you can easily fix it with washers or small pieces of wood.

One small tip: After installation, regularly check all screws to ensure nothing becomes loose. This helps prevent any wobbly issues later on.
