ᐅ Adding Furniture Casters to Kallax Units Later – Are They Stable?

Hello everyone,

I am considering attaching furniture casters to my already assembled Kallax shelf to make it easier to move around the room. My main question is: How stable is this solution really?

Can you estimate whether the casters will make the shelf very wobbly or even affect its load-bearing capacity? I’m concerned that adding casters might reduce the shelf’s safety, especially when storing heavy items inside.

Which type of casters are best suited (with locking brakes, large or small wheels), and what is the ideal way to attach them without damaging the material?

Are there any practical tips or important points to consider, especially when the furniture is already fully assembled?

Thanks for your advice!

One year ago, I attached casters to my Kallax. Important: Do not use casters with insufficient floor grip. The brakes work great for me, and the shelf stands securely.

Pre-drilling is a must!

If you install casters, be sure to check the maximum load capacity of each caster. It’s better to slightly over-specify. My Kallax does not lose stability as long as the screws are properly secured.

The shelf is tall and narrow or loaded unevenly.

It would be interesting to know how heavy your shelf will be when loaded and whether you only plan to move it occasionally.

Exactly! The frequency of use also matters. For frequent moving, I recommend casters with good quality plastic or rubber wheels, as they are quieter and protect the floor.

In addition, attention should be paid to the stability of the screw connections: fastening with only a small torque is not sufficient.

Overall, a combination of suitable casters, reinforced base frame, and careful assembly is essential to ensure that the shelf remains stable.

@Lakebu: How tall is your shelf, and do you plan to move it only within the same room or also across door thresholds?

Thanks for all the replies!

The shelf is 77 cm (30 inches) high, has 4 compartments, and is usually filled with a normal amount of books. The total weight is probably between 20 and 40 kg (44 and 88 lbs).

It is occasionally moved, mainly for rearranging the living space, but rarely to a different room. There are no door thresholds.

I don’t want to risk it tipping over, especially since it stands on a wide floor covering that might be somewhat slippery.

Lastly: How would you attach the casters exactly? Directly to the base panel or with something in between (metal brackets or similar)?

For your setup with up to 40kg (88 lbs) and occasional repositioning, I would recommend not mounting the casters directly to the floor slab, but instead using metal brackets.

This has the following advantages:
- Better load distribution
- Protection of the wood from pulling out under load
- Ability to fasten screws at a greater angle

If you mount the casters directly, you shift the entire load onto a thin wooden floor, which can split if the screw length is incorrect. A sturdy metal bracket (e.g., 1.5–2 mm (0.06–0.08 inch) sheet thickness) under the slab also improves lateral stability.

Also make sure to reinforce the screws with washers to prevent the screw heads from pressing into the wood.

That’s great! 🙂 Then a solid system with a locking brake and medium-sized casters is definitely enough. I did something similar—I simply screwed metal brackets onto the corners and fixed the casters securely. Everything holds up really well, even when you pull on it firmly—no wobbling!

If you attach the casters with metal brackets, as Parbo recommends, you can also add some rubber buffers or felt pads underneath. That way, there’s no squeaking, and the shelf stays stable.
