Hello everyone,
I’m currently considering getting a Kallax shelf from IKEA, but I have a question that maybe some of you can answer: Does a Kallax shelf (the standard size 77x77 cm (30x30 inches), depth 39 cm (15 inches)) fit easily into a car without needing to be disassembled for transport?
I have a medium-sized station wagon, but I’m unsure about the height and whether the shelf can be tilted or if it’s too bulky. Has anyone tried this? How did you go about it?
I would appreciate any experiences, even if different vehicle types are mentioned. Thanks!

My vehicle is a 2009 VW Passat Variant, rear seatbacks fold down separately, headrests removable, cargo area flat.Hey,
I have a similar Passat, 2008 model, and I actually managed to fit the Kallax in sideways with the seatback folded down and the headrests removed. It took a bit of tilting and patient maneuvering.
But honestly: I didn’t just place it in straight; I laid it in at a slight angle to avoid damaging the surfaces – a bit of padding between the shelf and the car helps.
Conclusion: It fits, but not without some effort and improvisation. Taking it apart is easier, but if you have two people, this method works too. Good luck!

The Kallax can be disassembled relatively easily since it is connected with dowels and screws. IKEA usually uses a plastic mallet or a rubber hammer to help separate the joints.
Important: Keep the screws safe and remove the shelves when disassembling to significantly reduce the weight.
The assembly instructions will help you put it back together: The most important steps are correctly inserting the dowels and tightening the screws evenly.
If you need tools: A simple Phillips screwdriver is sufficient. I recommend placing the shelf unit on a soft surface during assembly to prevent scratches.
Summary: Disassembly is doable and takes about 10-15 minutes. The durability is hardly affected if you are careful.
