Good morning everyone, I am about to assemble the Ikea Hemnes wardrobe and wondering if there are any tools or aids that could make the assembly process significantly easier. It is often mentioned that the small Allen wrenches and screwdrivers provided with such furniture are too weak or don’t fit optimally. Therefore, I am looking for advice on additional tools that can be used to install screws and wooden dowels more easily and securely, without risking damage to parts or unnecessarily prolonging the work. Perhaps there are also special techniques or tools for properly aligning the furniture components during assembly? I would really appreciate any specific experiences and recommendations.

I would add, however, that a rubber mallet is not always absolutely necessary. If you are careful, a regular hammer with a small piece of scrap wood between the hammer and the dowel also works.

What bothers me, though, is that most people do not spend enough time on preparation. Assembly aids like clamps are only truly effective if everything is precisely aligned beforehand. Otherwise, you end up fixing more than you build.

Cordless screwdriver, rubber mallet, square – these are the classic tools that help. Important: set the torque correctly, or you might strip the screws.

Clamps are especially useful when working on Hemnes furniture, particularly for larger cabinet parts. They help secure the pieces and make it easier to align the screws.

It is best to also use a small flashlight or headlamp when the instructions are poorly lit. This often makes screw holes easier to see and helps prevent mistakes.

That’s an important point! In fact, before assembly today, I laid out and pre-sorted all the parts. Despite the experience, I often have trouble with the correct alignment of the side panels and back panels, so I’m sure I would benefit from using clamp pliers.

Finally, I’m curious if anyone can recommend specific cordless drill models or settings that work well with the screws from Ikea? Some say the torque setting should be kept low, while others prefer medium to high.

Regarding the torque: I recommend setting it to level 2 to 3 out of 6 to avoid overtightening. It’s important to start with less force and then tighten further if needed. Ikea screws are often made from soft material.

As for the cordless drill/driver: A model with adjustable torque and a good grip is important. It doesn’t have to be expensive, but cheap ones with low-quality attachments tend to cause more problems.
