Hello everyone,

I am currently looking into whether there are special protective films designed for Ikea Hemnes furniture surfaces. Specifically, I am interested in whether such films exist that are precisely matched to the material properties of the Hemnes series to prevent scratches, stains, or wear over the long term, without negatively affecting the look or feel.

Most protective films on the market are usually made for smooth, painted, or synthetic surfaces. However, Hemnes furniture is mostly made of solid wood with a finish that retains some natural texture.

Has anyone had experience or can recommend manufacturer-specific or at least highly suitable films that work well for this type of surface? Or would another protection method be more appropriate?

Thank you in advance!

This is an interesting and nuanced question.

Personally, I am skeptical whether protective films specifically designed for Hemnes furniture actually exist. Ikea does not provide any explicit coatings or protective films for these pieces.

As far as I know, the Hemnes surfaces are coated with a clear lacquer layer that already offers some protection. Any specialized film would therefore need to be extremely adhesive while still allowing the natural wood grain to show through.

Does anyone actually have a source or manufacturer that promotes this? I consider it technically challenging. Usually, furniture wax or specialized wood oils are a better solution.

I have never heard of a special protective film for Hemnes.

Usually, a thin matte protective film is sufficient if you really want to protect something.

Otherwise, it’s better to use tablecloths or coverings.

Brief and structured on the topic:

1. Material of the Hemnes surface: solid wood, usually pine, with a white painted surface that is slightly textured.
2. Protective films in general: usually designed for smooth, painted surfaces, as adhesives do not adhere well to rough surfaces.
3. Special protective films for Hemnes: as far as I know, there are no official ones from Ikea.
4. Alternative protection methods:
- Furniture polish and wax: increases protection and maintains the surface.
- Felt pads to prevent scratches in contact areas.
- Table runners or mats.

My advice: A non-breathable film could damage the paint layer. Therefore, it is better to use conservative care methods instead of films.

Hey,

I think a little protective film for the Hemnes is a good idea if you have children or pets that tend to create a lot of mess. But most films I know are designed for smooth surfaces and might be too "cold" and slippery for the character of Hemnes.

Exactly, and that brings me to the point that such special films are probably not a standard product. So if anyone has a good tip, it would definitely be welcome here 🙂

If in doubt, I have also protected furniture a bit with transparent cardboard or soft felt—doesn’t look perfect, but does the job.

Hello Gumihau,

to address your detailed question: There are no official protective films from Ikea specifically for the Hemnes series. The Hemnes furniture actually has a lacquered surface that maintains a natural wood look, and standard PVC or adhesive films do not adhere well to it, which can affect the bonding.

I would recommend considering the following options instead:

- Care with suitable furniture waxes or mild maintenance oils. This protects the surface and preserves the texture.
- Felt or rubber pads for areas subject to heavy use.
- For table tops, there are transparent, specially cut protection sheets made of acrylic or glass that can be placed on top as needed. These maintain the appearance and protect the surface without altering the direct contact area.

Please note that protective films often do not adhere well to rough lacquered wood, which can later cause unsightly bubbles or peeling. If you really want to use a film, you should request samples and test them on an inconspicuous spot.
