Hello everyone,

I have a rather specific problem and hope to find some experiences or solutions here. It concerns the typical KALLAX shelving units from IKEA. These open shelves are very flexible and practical, but the problem is the constant dust buildup despite regular cleaning.

My question is: Are there any tested ideas or practical solutions to reduce dust accumulation in KALLAX shelves? I am especially interested in tips that do not completely eliminate the open design (so preferably no simple doors) and do not require ongoing intensive maintenance. Maybe someone knows clever tricks, materials, or inserts that help reduce dust with minimal effort?

Thank you for your help!

Hello tachen58,

I can definitely relate to your problem – open shelving has the advantage of easy access to everything, but dust buildup is a real issue.

Personally, I find it helpful to fill the compartments with fabric boxes that can be cleaned regularly. I know this changes the look a bit, but it significantly reduces the dust problem. I have also occasionally used damp wipes to attract dust rather than just spreading it around – this works better than dry dusting.

Sometimes, I think you just have to find a compromise between appearance and maintenance effort. Still, I hope others have even better ideas 🙂

Regarding dust and open KALLAX compartments, I want to provide a more detailed response because I had a similar issue and tried different approaches.

First, you have to keep in mind that dust in open shelves is unavoidable since air circulation constantly brings in dust particles. Therefore, the only option is to reduce or prevent the buildup.

The first solution is to add inserts to the compartments. There are transparent plexiglass or acrylic panels that can be custom-made and simply placed at the front. This prevents most of the dust while maintaining the open character. It is important that the panels fit well and are easy to remove so you can still access the compartments.

Alternatively, you can use fabric boxes, as Friedrich already mentioned – here, the material and quality vary greatly, which affects how much dust they attract. I also recommend regularly cleaning the underside of the shelf and the compartments themselves with a microfiber cloth, since regular cloths often just spread the dust around.

A technically interesting option is an anti-static coating for the surfaces, which reduces dust attraction, but it is not easy to apply in a living environment.

I’m curious how often you currently clean the compartments and if you already use special cleaning products? In my experience, solutions like this always involve a combination of preventive measures and regular maintenance.

From a professional standpoint, I would recommend the following points:

1. Use air filters in the surrounding area to reduce airborne dust.

2. Use inserts for the compartments made from smooth, easy-to-clean materials, such as plexiglass, to prevent direct dust accumulation inside the compartments.

3. Clean regularly but gently with antistatic cloths to avoid simply spreading the dust.

4. Alternatively, consider whether dust can be minimized by grouping books or decorations in storage boxes – this reduces the surface area that attracts dust.

Based on my experience, these measures are long-lasting and keep maintenance efforts manageable.

I installed simple sliding doors made of plexiglass, cut to fit the KALLAX unit. This keeps everything neat while still allowing visibility inside. It has been very helpful for me.

That sounds like a good idea! I've always been hesitant because of the effort involved, but if it really fits well and is easy to handle, it might be a solution that keeps dust out while preserving the shelving unit’s structure.

Do you know approximately how much a custom job like that costs, or where you had them made?
