I recently got a Kallax shelf unit converted into a workbench because I wanted more storage space for DIY projects. However, I’ve noticed that when using it as a workbench, it quickly accumulates a lot of dust and wood chips. Especially when sanding or sawing, the dust spreads everywhere on and inside the compartments.
I’m curious if any of you have experience with this and if there are effective solutions to manage the dust problem on the Kallax workbench. In particular, I’d like to know if the shelves can be better sealed or protected, or if there are recommended additional dust protection measures.

First of all: The issue with dust when repurposing a Kallax unit as a workbench is indeed relevant, since the shelf was not originally designed for workshop use.
1. Sealing the compartments: You can cover the backs with thin plexiglass or another smooth panel, which will prevent dust from entering from the rear.
2. Protective film or curtains: Especially the open compartments can be fitted with removable films or curtains to keep dust out.
3. Work surface: A removable worktop with edge trims on top helps to avoid spreading dust onto the shelf components.
4. Vacuum connection: If you use power tools, make sure the dust extraction port is functional to reduce dust exposure.
In summary, I recommend sealing the open areas as best as possible and vacuuming targeted. Without fundamental modifications, it will be difficult to eliminate dust completely.

Dust distribution strongly depends on air circulation and the type of work being done. Sanding produces fine dust that tends to settle in all the gaps and crevices. An additional tip: you can equip the shelf compartments with transparent doors to keep dust out without needing to rebuild the shelf completely.

Dust can be annoying, of course, but I covered my shelf with fabric curtains. It works great for me and keeps the dust out effectively.
A small tip: Just install curtain tracks from the hardware store and attach curtains with clips. It doesn’t cost much and looks pretty cool!
