Hello everyone! I have an IKEA Hemnes piece of furniture at home that I’ve had for a while, and I’m considering how to enhance its appearance with simple do-it-yourself ideas. Specifically, I’m interested in whether there are easy yet effective methods that can be done with limited DIY skills. Maybe brush painting effects, replacing handles, or small structural modifications that give the furniture a more modern or personalized look. Does anyone have experience or useful tips that aren’t too complicated but can significantly improve the Hemnes? Thanks in advance!

The easiest way is to replace the handles. There are many affordable options that instantly change the look. A new coat of chalk paint also works well without much sanding needed.

Great question, re_vin! I covered my Hemnes with self-adhesive film – it was really easy and looks fantastic! 😍 Even small touches like colorful backsplashes or adding baseboards can really make the furniture stand out. You just have to be brave and get started!

A structured approach is helpful here. First, you should determine whether the piece of furniture has a painted or a melamine resin-coated surface, as this affects the choice of suitable paints and techniques. For wooden furniture like the Hemnes, chalk paints or acrylic lacquers work well. Replacing the handles is always a quick and effective measure. In addition, attaching decorative moldings or selectively stripping and repainting the surface are options, although more time-consuming. As simple DIY ideas, I recommend: - Replacing handles - Painting the surface with chalk paint - Using contact film for a design effect - Backing open areas with wallpaper or fabric

I would like to point out that the supposed simplicity of such DIY ideas should not be overestimated. What sounds good and straightforward can actually require time and care to achieve a professional result. It would be interesting to know if anyone has dealt with the specific material properties of Hemnes. How does the surface react to various paints or adhesives? Furthermore, it is important to question how stable the modified handles are—does the new drilling always fit precisely? These are not minor details but often determine long-term satisfaction with the project.

That is an important point. I would like to add that the interaction between the furniture material and the products used is often overlooked – for example, the adhesion of paint on MDF or veneer. For a long-lasting attractive result, it is important to use appropriate primers. Sanding the Hemnes can also be problematic because the surface is not solid wood but consists of core elements with thin top layers. Anyone who wants to refresh or personalize their furniture temporarily should rather choose removable modifications or marking techniques instead of radical changes.
