Hello everyone,

I am currently planning to get a KALLAX shelf unit from IKEA and want to add a surface cover or panel that is as scratch-resistant as possible. I am particularly interested in whether there are covers specifically designed for the KALLAX that can withstand typical everyday use without showing scratches or wear quickly.

Since many KALLAX shelves are used in living rooms or work areas, a durable surface is really important to make activities like placing decorations, books, or even writing easier without worrying about permanent damage.

Does anyone have experience with scratch-resistant covers that fit perfectly on KALLAX? I would like to know if there are specific products recommended for their material quality or if it is better to rely on generic solutions.

It is also important for me to find out whether these covers are available directly from IKEA or if external suppliers need to be considered.

Thanks for your expertise!

I would recommend having a glass panel custom made to size. Glass is extremely scratch-resistant and works perfectly as a protective surface. To my knowledge, IKEA does not offer this directly for the KALLAX, but glaziers can create a precise fit.

Good morning,

regarding the question about scratch-resistant covers for the KALLAX, I would like to share some practical advice:

1. Materials: The most commonly recommended materials for scratch-resistant covers are glass, acrylic glass (Plexiglas), and special HPL panels (high-pressure laminate). Glass is the most resistant to scratches but can break if it is not tempered. Plexiglas is lighter but less scratch-resistant.

2. Custom sizing: Since KALLAX shelves have different internal dimensions, the cover should ideally be custom-made to fit perfectly. This mainly applies to the smooth surface on top of the shelf. Usually, this is not a standard product but something you have made by local craftsmen (e.g., glaziers) or specialized furniture accessory suppliers.

3. Alternative solutions: There are also self-adhesive protective films, which are not fully scratch-proof but offer reasonable resistance to minor scratches. This is a more affordable and easier-to-replace option.

4. Installation: Make sure to fix the cover securely with non-slip measures to prevent it from moving or getting damaged.

Summary:
- To my knowledge, scratch-resistant covers specifically from the manufacturer IKEA for KALLAX are not available.
- Custom-made glass panels are the best and proven solution.
- Plexiglas can be an alternative if you want to reduce the weight.

I hope this helps!

Glass may be scratch-resistant, but this is often overestimated. Unless it is specially tempered or has a scratch-resistant coating, glass panels can still develop fine scratches, especially if you move them frequently or place hard objects on them.

Furthermore, it is worth considering whether a very smooth, hard surface is always the best choice for the intended use. For those who want to use the shelf as a work surface, glass can also reflect and cause glare.

special HPL panels... plexiglass...

In general, it is also important to check whether alternative materials like HPL panels are truly scratch-resistant in the long run. These quality claims are often provided by manufacturers, and their practical durability can sometimes be questioned.

Therefore, I think it makes sense to gather user experiences from those who have actually used these surfaces over time to better assess their durability.

Is there anyone here who has used and tested such a surface in the long term?

To fully answer the question about scratch-resistant covers for the KALLAX, I would like to go into some technical details.

The KALLAX itself is made of laminated particleboard, whose surface already has some scratch resistance but tends to show wear quickly with frequent use. Therefore, a protective cover is usually advisable.

1. Glass Panels:
The best scratch-resistant option is toughened safety glass (tempered glass), which is hardened and thus more break-resistant than regular glass. The surface is almost scratch-proof, but the panels must be measured precisely to fit the KALLAX. Some suppliers offer custom cutting, but you should pay attention to the panel thickness: 4-6 mm (0.16-0.24 inches) is practical.

2. HPL Panels:
High Pressure Laminates consist of multiple layers of resin and paper pressed together under high pressure. They are commonly used for countertops and are also used by IKEA, for example in the KARLBY series. Although they are considered scratch-resistant, deeper scratches can occur if sharp or hard objects come into direct contact with them.

3. Plexiglass / Acrylic:
Plexiglass is lighter and more shatter-resistant than glass, but the surface is more prone to scratches and tends to yellow when exposed to sunlight.

4. Films and Protective Coverings:
Self-adhesive films are not truly scratch-resistant but rather provide a layer of protection against minor damage.

For the most durable solution, I recommend:
- Ordering a tempered glass panel in the correct size
- Careful installation with non-slip pads (to prevent the panel from sliding and to protect the furniture)

Question for you: Would you like to further process the cover (e.g., drilling, attaching stickers), or should it be as maintenance-free as possible? The answer can strongly influence the choice.
