Are there reinforced shelves available for the IKEA Billy bookcase? I have the classic Billy with a width of 80 cm (32 inches) and I’m considering whether the standard shelves can be replaced with stronger versions. I mainly want to store heavy books on them and worry that the standard shelves might sag or even break over time. If IKEA doesn’t offer specific reinforced shelves, I would also appreciate recommendations for alternative solutions or materials that are compatible. Thanks in advance for your tips!

IKEA does not sell specific "reinforced" shelves for the Billy bookcase. However, you can have thicker particle boards cut to size and use those yourself. This usually provides significantly better stability than the original shelves.

For reference: The original Billy shelves are typically made of a wood fiberboard with a melamine coating, about 16 mm (0.6 inches) thick. The stability is sufficient for regular books, but with heavier loads and longer spans, bending can occur.

There are no specially offered "reinforced" shelves from IKEA for the Billy series. A common solution is to make your own shelves from plywood or solid wood, choosing a thickness of at least 18–22 mm (0.7–0.9 inches). Additionally, you can attach extra braces underneath or use metal brackets to increase load-bearing capacity.

It is also important to know the weight of the books and the actual unsupported length of the shelves. If you like, you can share your approximate expected loads here. Then I can provide more specific material and construction advice. In general, I also recommend supporting the shelves on the inside against the back panel or with metal supports, as this significantly improves load capacity.

Yes, I also cover that: reinforced floors are not available from IKEA. Just order thicker wooden boards, cut them to size, and install them. Brackets for added stability are a good idea.

No, IKEA does not offer reinforced shelves for the Billy. My advice: for heavier loads, it's better to build your own shelves or have them custom made by a carpenter. You can also screw thin metal profiles underneath the shelves to provide additional support.
