Hello everyone,

I am currently planning the installation and connection of IKEA Metod sink cabinets in my new kitchen and am looking for practical tips to make the process easier. Specifically, I would like to know how to best prepare the sink cabinet for the water supply and drainage system. Are there any recommended procedures or helpful tools that have proven effective for neatly and accurately routing the pipes to avoid leaks or installation issues afterwards? Any advice on potential pitfalls when fitting the IKEA Metod cabinets would also be very helpful. I want to minimize the time spent on corrections and am therefore looking for specific practical experience or tips that are particularly useful when connecting the sink cabinet.

Thanks in advance for your input!

The most important thing is to precisely measure and mark the connections before installation. Use flexible connection hoses and check all seals before fitting. In IKEA Metod base cabinets for sinks, pre-cut openings for pipe outlets often help; properly cutting these saves a lot of time.

Planning the water supply and drainage pipes before assembling the cabinet is crucial to avoid later rework. I recommend not fully installing the back panel of the Metod cabinet, but rather creating targeted cutouts so the pipes can be routed without bending. Additionally, it can be helpful to pre-assemble the siphon outside the cabinet to precisely determine the connection dimensions.

I agree completely – thorough preparation using IKEA's tools, such as special hole saws, is highly advisable. Furthermore, a flexible push-fit siphon can significantly simplify installation by compensating for slight variations in the position of the connections.

It’s interesting how many people here strictly follow the assembly instructions, even though IKEA Metod sink cabinets actually allow for more flexibility.

I think that’s the right approach, but in my opinion it goes even further: Many underestimate how much time and trouble can be saved by making a slightly larger opening or a custom-fit back panel. There’s nothing wrong with adapting the cabinet yourself instead of rigidly sticking to the standards. Anyone who really wants to make the installation easier should know that IKEA designed these cabinets to be modular and adaptable—which means being willing to “improvise” a little. Otherwise, you quickly run into limits, especially with non-standard pipe runs or if the water connections aren’t positioned precisely.

One provocative thought to finish: The best tool for installing Metod sink cabinets isn’t a screwdriver, but rather an angle grinder, jigsaw, and some DIY skills.
