firenHello everyone,
I am currently planning to assemble my new Ikea Hemnes dresser and wanted to ask if anyone in this forum has encountered any specific issues or tricky parts during the assembly that are definitely good to know about? I am particularly interested in whether there are any known fit problems with the components, special notes regarding the screws, or potential pitfalls in the instructions. It would also be helpful to know if additional tools are needed beyond what is normally included in the set, or any tips on how to make the assembly efficient and sturdy.
I want to avoid unexpected difficulties during assembly and be well prepared. Thanks in advance for your experiences and advice!

A Phillips screwdriver is important; sometimes the one provided is not sufficient.I can confirm that. Especially with furniture like Hemnes, which is made of solid parts, the quality of the screwdriver is crucial. I also recommend reading the instructions carefully, step by step, and sorting all the parts thoroughly before starting.
Another often overlooked point is to align the back panel precisely and ensure it is not skewed; otherwise, nothing will fit properly in the end, and the furniture will not stand evenly. If possible, it is advisable to work with two people, which makes handling larger components much easier.
To approach the topic from a more technical perspective: With the Hemnes series, it is essential to exercise a certain level of care, especially when assembling the drawer slides.
- The metal rails must be installed exactly parallel to each other; otherwise, the drawers may stick or become misaligned.
- In my experience, it works best to loosely screw all parts together first, then carefully align them before finally tightening everything. This prevents tension.
- Some have reported inaccurate drill hole positioning on the wooden parts, which can especially affect older or possibly slightly different units from mass production.
- The instructions are clear, but you should be careful to assign the parts correctly, as it’s easy to confuse the same types of screws.
Have you already checked whether all parts are complete and undamaged? Sometimes this is the crucial point that causes problems later on.

Oh, and during assembly: Take regular short breaks, or you might get overwhelmed by all the screws before you know it! 😜
Here are a few precise tips:
- The Hemnes series uses solid pine wood, which reacts to moisture. Make sure the parts have been stored dry and at room temperature before assembly to avoid warping later on.
- Screws and dowels typically fit precisely, but it’s worth checking them before you start assembling to rule out any damaged parts.
- A cordless drill with adjustable torque is recommended for assembly to prevent damaging the wood.
- The back panel is usually fixed with the provided nails; a small hammer used carefully works best here.
If you need specific sketches from the instructions to review critical assembly steps in advance, I can gladly explain them in more detail here.
