Hello everyone,

I wanted to ask if anyone here has experience with the Ikea Hemnes shelving units and if there are any known issues during assembly that one should particularly watch out for.

I am especially interested in whether there are any problems with the fitting accuracy of the parts, if the instructions are unclear in some sections, or if the material tends to give way, requiring extra care during assembly to avoid damage.

Are there any general tips to make the assembly process smoother?

I have some technical skills, but I would like to avoid unnecessary frustration.

Thanks in advance for your insights and advice!

Hello Lu-ba,

I’m familiar with the Hemnes shelving unit and can tell you that while it is generally well designed, there are a few points that some people might find challenging during assembly.

First, the instructions are mostly clear, but the parts often look very similar, so without careful sorting, it’s easy to accidentally use the wrong piece. I recommend checking all parts against the parts list at the start and sorting them by type.

Also, the pre-drilled holes in the Hemnes unit are usually very precise, which is good, but if you overtighten the screws, the wood can easily split. Therefore, I suggest initially screwing them in loosely and only tightening them evenly at the end.

Another common issue is stability with larger units: it makes sense to secure the shelves to the wall. Although Ikea includes a wall bracket for this purpose, it is essential to use it, otherwise the furniture could tip over.

If you have electrician’s tools, a cordless screwdriver with torque control can make assembly easier. Otherwise, many people assemble it using a handheld screwdriver.

Overall, the unit is sturdy, but as with most particleboard furniture, it’s best to approach assembly carefully and thoughtfully.

If you’re interested in a more detailed step-by-step guide, just let me know!

I occasionally had some issues because a few holes didn’t line up perfectly. Just pre-drill and carefully screw in the screws to prevent tearing out.

Otherwise: sort the parts beforehand and keep the instructions handy. Wall mounting is mandatory.

I would like to clarify the aspect of material quality: The Hemnes shelf is mostly made of solid pine wood with some veneered back panels. Due to the natural properties of wood, minor warping may occur with changes in humidity, which can slightly affect the fit.

From my experience, the Ikea instructions are generally functional, but the layout can sometimes be quite compact. Less experienced users should take their time, follow the steps carefully, and identify each part according to its numbering.

Regarding stability, the included wall brackets are sufficient if installed correctly. It is advisable to use standard wall plugs and screws suitable for the wall type (e.g., cavity plugs vs. concrete).

To protect the wood, I recommend avoiding the use of excessive force when tightening screws, as already mentioned. A torque wrench or a cordless screwdriver with adjustable torque settings is ideal for this purpose.

Summary of known issues:
- Fit can vary slightly due to the wood material
- Screws can damage the wood if over-tightened
- Similar parts require careful sorting
- Wall mounting is mandatory

Those who follow these recommendations will rarely encounter serious problems.
