Hello everyone,
I joined this forum because I’m currently having difficulties assembling my Ikea Brimnes wardrobe, which seem to be related to the back panels. Specifically:
Are there any known issues with assembling Ikea Brimnes back panels?
I get the impression that the back panels often don’t fit properly or warp during assembly. Sometimes the pre-drilled holes don’t seem to be perfectly accurate, which makes attaching them difficult. Maybe some of you have experience with how to avoid common pitfalls or if material defects are frequent.
I’m also interested in whether there are different versions of the back panels that possibly vary in material or dimensions.
Thanks for your support!

Tips I can recommend: Thank you for the detailed tips! Pre-drilling has also been an issue for me so far – do you perhaps have any advice on how to pre-drill without damaging the back panel too much?
I ask because I’m worried about damaging the thin back panel if I apply too much pressure.

Lightly smoothing the edges with fine sandpaper if any splintering is visible I will definitely give that a try.
What do you think: Does the material become more stable over time, or does it remain quite sensitive? I imagine that exposure to humidity or temperature changes might cause the material to warp, for example?

For pre-drilling the Brimnes back panels, I always use a fine wood drill bit that is significantly smaller in diameter than the screws. This reduces the risk of the material splitting.
Important:
- Always drill at a low speed and with light pressure.
- To protect the surface, you can place a small piece of tape over the drilling spot; this prevents splintering.
- Never drill holes that are too large, otherwise the screw will not hold.
- After drilling, use screws with fine threads.
When driving in the screws, I recommend starting with a manual screwdriver instead of an electric one for better control.
This keeps the material intact and avoids damage.
Regarding the influence of humidity:
Yes, the particleboard material is sensitive to moisture and temperature fluctuations. Therefore, keep the cabinet in a dry place if possible. This reduces warping and swelling.
I just wanted to quickly share that I experienced similar issues with the back panels on my Brimnes wardrobe, and found it quite frustrating.
What helped me was not placing the back panels directly on the floor, but on a large, soft blanket that helped even out minor unevenness. Patience is also extremely important.
Every tip shared here is very valuable, thank you all!
Once the wardrobe is assembled, it feels really good to have completed the process despite the small challenges.
