Hello everyone, I am looking for effective ways to make my Ikea Brimnes furniture more stable. Specifically, I’m referring to the dressers and cabinets from the Brimnes series, which sometimes feel a bit wobbly, especially when filled with clothes or other items. Are there any proven tips or tricks to stabilize this furniture line without much effort or expensive additional parts? It would also be helpful to know if reinforcing the back panels is possible or if adding extra screws in certain places makes a difference. I look forward to your experiences and advice!

Simply attach additional brackets to the corners and reinforce the back panel with a thin plywood sheet.

That is a good approach, but I want to point out that with the back panel, the material is not the only factor; the precise fastening is equally important. Just placing a panel loosely behind doesn’t help much. It is crucial to securely fasten the wood panel at specific points to the carcass using appropriate screws, without compressing the material. This creates a true composite structure that stabilizes in all directions.

What exactly is your setup? Is the cabinet placed against a wall or freestanding? This can influence the measures needed.

I would like to add that for free-standing Brimnes furniture, anchoring to the wall using the typical Ikea safety brackets should not be overlooked. These measures are important not only for safety reasons but also significantly improve stability. Without wall mounting, the furniture can remain unstable despite all internal reinforcements.

In addition to the points already mentioned, I recommend checking the floor sections and feet for evenness. Small uneven spots often cause wobbling, which affects the entire structure. Small wooden wedges or felt pads under the feet can be very helpful here to give the furniture a more stable footing.

Reinforcement of the back panel by replacing it or adding a stronger wooden board (e.g., plywood or multiplex) behind the original back panel

I completely agree. Multiplex with a thickness of 6–8 mm (1/4–5/16 inch) is ideal because it is very stable and fits well inside the furniture. It is important to pre-drill all holes before installation to prevent splitting.

If costly specialized fittings are not an option, the metal brackets mentioned here from hardware stores are the best solution. When purchasing, look for brackets with a leg length of at least 40 mm (1.5 inches) to ensure solid support. Don’t forget: regularly checking the screws helps maintain long-term stability.

I simply replaced the back panel of my Brimnes dresser with a 4mm (5/32 inch) plywood board. Afterwards, I tightened all the screws and reinforced it with brackets – now it holds very securely.

Your input is great! I’d say: If you have some DIY skills, you can achieve a lot of stability with a small budget. For anyone who enjoys working with tools, it’s definitely worth it. And in the end, the cabinet feels like a little hero. 😉
