Hello everyone,
In recent weeks, I have heard from several users that there are certain defects or weaknesses with IKEA Hemnes furniture, especially with dressers and beds, which only become apparent over time. I am particularly interested in knowing if there are any known, systematic issues—such as with the material quality, hinges, or stability—and how to best fix or prevent them.
Has anyone had experience with Hemnes shelves or Hemnes beds where screws have come loose, the wood has given way, or drawers no longer slide properly? Are there any clever DIY solutions or official repair guidelines you would recommend?
I would appreciate a detailed assessment, preferably with advice on how to restore functionality without having to replace everything.

I claim: Those who want truly durable furniture should avoid Hemnes as a long-term solution. That’s certainly a provocative view. Personally, I think that with IKEA Hemnes you get very good value for the price, as long as you are aware of the flaws and take appropriate measures. A small tip from me: reinforce the bed joints with a few extra screws or metal brackets. It costs very little and noticeably increases the lifespan.
Otherwise, no furniture lasts forever – not even designer pieces. Hemnes strikes a middle ground that works great for many people.

If screws are turning loose, wedge toothpicks with wood glue in place. This is a proven method! I always recommend dipping the toothpick pieces in glue and letting them dry briefly before pressing them into the thread – this ensures a better hold.
Regular maintenance of surfaces also helps protect the material and prevent cracks. Especially with Hemnes furniture made of pine wood with a lacquered finish, you should avoid using any harsh cleaners.

Are there any smart DIY solutions or official repair instructions you would recommend?Official repair instructions from IKEA are not always available for all components, but their customer service often provides replacement parts for Hemnes that can be easily swapped out—such as hinges or handles.
For DIY users: minor damages are often repaired effectively with wood filler or special wood repair kits. Loose joints can be stabilized by applying self-adhesive felt pads at contact points to reduce wobbling parts.
Those who want not only to repair but also to improve the appearance can sand the edges and repaint them—this refreshes the furniture visually and also provides protection.
