I recently looked at several Ikea PLATSA shelving units and am considering getting one. However, I noticed that the different units seem to vary in assembly complexity – some appear simpler, while others obviously have many individual parts and more complex joining mechanisms.

Therefore, I would like to know: Are there certain Ikea PLATSA units that are objectively more difficult or time-consuming to assemble compared to other variations within the same system? For example, due to larger modules, more complex shapes, or special assembly steps?

I am especially interested in whether there are models where the assembly is noticeably more challenging for someone with basic DIY skills than the “standard” PLATSA units.

Who has experience with different PLATSA variants and can share firsthand insights? What should be taken into account to ensure the assembly does not become problematic later?

Absolutely yes! Especially the PLATSA shelves that include drawers, doors, or built-in compartments are often much more demanding than the simple shelf models. I have personally assembled several with hinged doors and drawers – it requires some patience and a precise step-by-step approach.

Regarding assembly: it’s really important to take your time to carefully study the instructions and organize the parts systematically; otherwise, things can quickly become quite chaotic. But the best part is the great feeling you get at the end when the unit is standing and everything works! So don’t get discouraged, even if it takes a bit longer at the start :-)

Yes, there are indeed differences, mainly due to the construction type and additional features. The PLATSA series is modular and ranges from simple open shelves to more complex units with flaps, doors, drawers, and extra internal organizer systems.

Some key factors that can make assembly more challenging:
- Size and weight: Larger modules with multiple sections require more stabilization and sometimes additional internal panels.
- Doors and drawers: Installing hinges, runners, and soft-close mechanisms demands greater precision and more time.
- Connection hardware: Some shelves use special fasteners that need careful alignment.
- Adapting to room conditions: For example, planning shelves up to the ceiling or filling corners with units increases complexity and assembly effort.

I recommend checking carefully before ordering whether your own DIY experience and available tools are sufficient. Gathering the necessary tools in advance can also save time, as Ikea assembly tools often don’t include items like a suitable screwdriver or a cordless drill with the right bits.

What has been your experience with Ikea furniture so far? Have you already assembled other PLATSA models?

That’s good advice. I’ve also hesitated to take on a larger PLATSA shelving unit with multiple doors and drawers because I wasn’t sure if I fully understood all the assembly details. Especially the sliding doors and internal shelves seemed a bit complicated from a layperson’s perspective.

Perhaps it’s a good idea to start with a small, simple model first to get familiar with the system before moving on to larger units. That really eases the process.

vinpau, how did you approach it? Did you go straight for the more complex modules, or did you try out smaller versions first?

I jumped right in! 🚀 I bought a large PLATSA shelving system with doors and drawers. Sure, it was a bit challenging at first, but with some patience and the courage to take it step by step, everything worked out great.

A tip from me: Don’t try to do everything at once. Instead, assemble individual parts first and secure everything properly before moving on. This helps avoid mistakes that are hard to fix later.

Absolutely – especially with the drawers, you really need to be careful, or nothing will close properly! But the relief and satisfaction when everything fits perfectly in the end are totally worth the effort.

So: Don’t be discouraged, the somewhat more complex PLATSA units are a lot of fun once you get the hang of them!
