tautoralf6 Mar 2021 09:17Hello everyone, I am currently planning a new storage system for my living room and have focused on the Ikea Platsa series. My main question is as follows: Are there any versions of the PLATSA furniture from Ikea with soft-close doors, meaning doors that close automatically and quietly? So far, I have only seen the standard models, which usually do not have damped hinges or soft-close mechanisms. It would be great if someone with experience or detailed product information could help. I am especially interested in whether Ikea offers these soft-close doors as accessories or if it is possible to retrofit them without affecting the appearance or functionality of the PLATSA system. Thanks in advance!
Hello tautoralf,
regarding your question: Ikea does not officially offer PLATSA furniture with integrated soft-close hinges. The doors in the PLATSA series are standardly equipped with basic cup hinges that are not soft-closing. This means they close mechanically but not gently or quietly.
However, there are two options you can consider:
- You can try to purchase third-party soft-close hinges. There are compatible models that often can be installed, but you should carefully measure and check whether the drilling holes and hinge dimensions match.
- Alternatively, you can install so-called "soft-close adapters" that attach to the pivot point of the standard hinges. These are generally cheaper and easier to fit but sometimes have limitations regarding durability or appearance.
I recommend checking carefully before purchasing whether the modifications fit the PLATSA door, as not all hinges are identical. Ikea does not offer official soft-close hinge solutions specifically for PLATSA, but the conversion is doable with some DIY skills. I hope this helps you!

In addition to what LENNAU has mentioned, I would like to specifically address how Ikea generally handles the topic of soft-close:
- The PLATSA series itself does not have a factory-installed soft-close option.
- Other series like METOD or Pax do offer doors with soft-close hinges as a standard option.
If you are wondering whether Ikea officially offers soft-close hinges as accessories or spare parts for PLATSA, the answer is no. The system is designed to be simple and cost-effective from the start.
If you are willing to retrofit, you should look for high-quality soft-close hinges to avoid negatively affecting the door stops. However, installation requires precise work; otherwise, the functionality will suffer.
Conclusion: You won’t get soft-close doors for PLATSA directly from Ikea, but retrofitting is possible on your own with suitable parts, though it must be carefully planned and installed.

I’m joining this topic because I conducted a detailed analysis of soft-close mechanisms on Ikea PLATSA systems myself.
From a technical perspective, the PLATSA series is not designed for soft-close doors for several reasons:
- The standard concealed hinges do not have the necessary damping mechanisms, and the hinge geometry is not compatible with soft-close technology.
- Retrofit solutions require either completely new hinges or additional adapters that attach to the hinge.
I tested the following options:
- Replacing the PLATSA standard hinges with common soft-close hinges (e.g., Blum or Hettich, which are typically used for kitchen cabinets). The challenge here is bore pattern and installation compatibility. Since PLATSA uses different drilling patterns on the doors than many kitchen cabinets, this requires some modification work or buying new doors.
- Adding external soft-close dampers attached to the doors or hinges. These are more affordable but are less visually appealing and have limited durability.
For anyone who wants to use the PLATSA system but also wants soft-close, my recommendation is:
- either replacing the doors with doors from other series that come with soft-close hinges (if compatible)
- or switching to other Ikea systems like METOD, which offer this feature as standard.
Questions: How many doors do you want to retrofit, and are the hinges on your model standard concealed hinges or special ones? Depending on this, the effort might be more or less worthwhile.
I hope this gives you a good technical insight!

It makes a difference whether you are retrofitting a single door or an entire system.
Just briefly on the topic of soft-close for PLATSA: Ikea does not offer them. Retrofitting is possible, but you need to be careful with drilling and so on.
In my case, it worked fine for two doors using an inexpensive soft-close adapter. However, I wouldn’t recommend it for more than that.
