Hello everyone,

I’m considering getting a wardrobe from the Ikea PAX series. My question is whether there are PAX wardrobe models with shelves that are truly adjustable. It’s important for me that I can flexibly adapt the shelves to different heights to accommodate items of various sizes.

I know the PAX series offers many modules and accessories, but I’m not sure if the shelves are adjustable by default or if they are fixed and cannot be moved. Can anyone share their personal experience or information from product descriptions about how this works exactly?

Are there perhaps different types of shelves within the PAX series—some that can be used flexibly and others that are fixed in place?

Thanks a lot for your feedback!

Hello Samlau,

Regarding your question: Yes, the shelves in the Ikea PAX wardrobes are generally adjustable. The shelves are typically designed to fit into pre-drilled holes on the inside of the PAX frames, allowing for flexible height adjustment.

An important point is that the PAX wardrobes usually have shelf support holes spaced relatively close together—often in 3cm (1.2 inches) increments—which makes individual adjustments easier.

Specifically, this means you can place the shelves at your preferred height or remove them if you need more space for larger items. There are also accessories like support bars or additional shelves available that make the system even more versatile.

However, if you choose special shelving systems or fixed shelves, this may vary. But typically, almost all shelves in PAX wardrobes are flexible and adjustable.

I hope this helps!

Hello Samlau,

I would like to approach this topic in a more technical and detailed way because there are actually several important details with PAX wardrobes when you want to use the shelves flexibly.

First: The classic shelves for PAX are usually designed with standard fittings for dowel holes or metal pegs. This means you can adjust the shelves in a grid, usually 3 cm (1.2 inches) apart, as you like. These holes are pre-drilled in the side panels, making the system semi-modular.

Important points here:
- The load capacity of the shelves largely depends on the shelf material, for example particleboard or glass. You should consider this for your intended use.
- Some shelves have a front edge that helps prevent sagging when loaded.
- The PAX frame modules come in several depths (35 cm (14 inches), 58 cm (23 inches), 66 cm (26 inches)), and for the larger models, it is advisable to reinforce the shelves multiple times if you plan to store heavy items on them.

In addition to the regular shelves, there are also so-called compartment shelves with fold-out clothes rails or drawer inserts. These may be less flexible because they are often fixed directly to the cabinet carcass.

I am interested in how exactly you plan to use the wardrobe: Is it mainly for textiles, file folders, or rather bulky items? This influences whether you need a lot of flexibility with the shelves or prefer more fixed elements.

If you already have dimensions or ideas, please let me know. Then I can give you more targeted advice on accessories and installation.

For me, this is also the key question, because at first I found it quite difficult to figure out how adjustable the shelves really are.

I got a PAX wardrobe because I needed flexible sections for clothing on one hand, but also for boxes and some file folders of varying heights.

From my own experience, I can say that you can really adjust the shelves, but it is advisable to get some extra accessories right away – for example additional metal clips or shelves that Ikea sells separately. This way, you can adapt or modify your wardrobe even better later on if your needs change.

You just need to know that flexibility with PAX is certainly available, but only if you use the matching shelf components and don’t rely on the fixed shelves.

I’d also be interested to hear how much space you are planning for and if you have already selected specific items!
