Hello everyone,

I am currently focusing on planning a new closet system, where maximizing storage capacity is my main priority. Specifically, I am interested in whether there are any versions or configurations of Ikea Pax wardrobes that are specially optimized for maximum storage space.

I am not only concerned with the external dimensions but especially with the internal organization—how flexibly the compartments, drawers, and hanging systems can be combined to make the most efficient use of the available volume.

Are there any recommendations, combinations, or accessories that have been proven to significantly increase the storage capacity of Pax? Or are the options with these systems ultimately limited, making it better to consider other furniture or manufacturers?

Looking forward to your experiences and tips!

This topic comes up for me quite often, especially when space is limited. What I liked about Pax is that you can combine a wide variety of interior components, from drawers to hanging rails and baskets.

However, I noticed that some storage space is lost due to the frame and hinge depth. For maximum capacity, I would recommend choosing options with reduced frame widths if available, and customizing the interior as much as possible.

For very specific needs, measuring and planning yourself using the IKEA planning tool often helps, along with knowing exactly what you want to store—for example, larger clothing items, suitcases, or smaller accessories.

There are definitely combination options that are quite flexible, but achieving 100% utilization is rare since the modules are standardized.

That sums it up quite well. I have measured and configured several Pax units, and there are a few technical details that affect storage capacity:
- The depth of the wardrobe is usually about 58 cm (23 inches), which is standard for closets, but it can be tight for very bulky items.
- Internal dimensions are reduced by about 5 cm (2 inches) on each side due to the thickness of the panels and hinges, leaving a usable interior width of approximately 48–50 cm (19–20 inches).
- The combination of hanging rods, shelves, and drawers is crucial. Drawers provide organized storage but are always limited by metal runners, which reduce usable interior space.

My advice:
1. Plan vertically with multiple shelves for smaller items to make better use of the height.
2. When using hanging rods for clothes, pay attention to models that allow double hanging.
3. Keep in mind that interior dimensions and maximum capacity often represent a compromise between stability and space.

If you specify your exact needs (e.g., what you want to store), I can help work out the most optimal combination.

I think the whole "maximum storage" concept with Pax is a bit overrated. Sure, with smart interior organization you can get a lot out of it, but in the end, the system is designed for the mass market and not to completely fill individual apartments with storage space down to the last bit of volume.

My theory: You inevitably lose valuable space because of preset dimensions and frames. For maximum storage, custom cabinets or even built-in furniture are often better.

I also wonder if what’s really happening here is more of a desire for the perfect illusion of storage capacity rather than an actual significant increase. So instead of focusing only on Pax, it might be better to consider more modular and flexible systems or a sensible reduction of stored items themselves.

A well-founded assessment: PAX is basically a modular wardrobe system with a maximum depth of 58 cm (23 inches), which represents a solid average size in terms of dimensions. The internal width varies between approximately 50 and 56 cm (20 and 22 inches) due to the thickness of the carcass, depending on the external width.

The maximum usable capacity largely depends on the choice of interior fittings. The use of drawers, shelves, hanging rods, baskets, inner drawers, shoe compartments, etc., can be configured in very different ways.

Additional optimization options include:
- Making use of vertical space with shelves or small drawers
- Using accessories such as pull-out inserts or clothes lifts
- Adapting to the actual storage purpose (shoes, clothing, etc.)

An important factor is that Ikea PAX does not offer completely frameless modules. This leads to some loss of space due to connection profiles, doors, and side panels.

Conclusion: For maximum storage capacity, PAX combinations are very good but highly individual and never fully optimal. For even more capacity, specialized or custom-made solutions would be necessary.

To answer directly: Yes, there are PAX combinations designed for maximum storage capacity, mainly by using many shelves and interior drawers.

However, there is no official "maximum storage version," only a selection of modules that can be combined as needed.

Tip: Use the Ikea PAX planner to experiment with different layouts and focus on the internal dimensions. This way, you can get the most out of your space.
