ᐅ Are there any Ikea PAX options with adjustable cabinet depth?

MOBESAUHello everyone,
I am currently looking into whether Ikea PAX wardrobes are available in versions that allow flexible adjustment of the wardrobe depth. Specifically, I want to understand if PAX models are offered with variable depths, so that the depth of the units can be changed depending on room size or storage needs.
So far, I have seen different depth options, mostly 35 cm (14 inches) for shallow wardrobes or 58 cm (23 inches), but I wonder if there is some kind of adjustable depth that can be set on-site or varied through special components.
Does anyone have experience or details about PAX wardrobes that allow variable wardrobe depth? It would be great if you could also cover the mechanical possibilities for adjustment, possible conversion options, or compatible extensions.
Thanks for your insights!

if there are versions of Ikea PAX wardrobes where the cabinet depth can be adjusted flexibly.Honestly, when talking about Ikea PAX, you’re really referring to a modular system that is highly flexible in terms of width and height but has a fixed depth. This is due to the design, as the backs, hinges, and sliding door mechanisms are all calibrated to precise measurements.
Ikea does offer different cabinet depth options, of course, but as far as I know, there isn’t a variable depth that can simply be adjusted on the fly. What you might mean is the option to choose wardrobes with shallower or deeper depths, but these are fixed configurations, not continuously adjustable modules.
I think the idea of a “variable depth” sounds appealing, but for practical reasons within the IKEA PAX design, there is hardly any room for that technically. It would be interesting to hear if someone else disagrees or has evidence otherwise.

The available depths are standardized, usually 35 cm (14 inches) and 58 cm (23 inches), as already mentioned. The modularity mainly concerns width and height, with flexible interior fittings.
To increase the depth, modifications could theoretically be made, such as altering the back panels or constructing additional frames, but this is not intended and undermines the purpose of a standardized system.
One possible workaround is combining different modules side by side to optimize storage space despite the fixed depth.
Has anyone here ever tried to change the depth through a custom modification, or are there special parts from IKEA itself that assist with this?

whether there are versions of Ikea PAX wardrobes where the wardrobe depth can be adjusted flexibly.Hello MOBESAU,
I have assembled several PAX wardrobes and can confirm that there is no official option to directly vary the wardrobe depth within a defined range. IKEA offers two standard depths, which you noted correctly: 35 cm (14 inches) for narrower spaces, usually for upper clothing or as an addition, and 58 cm (23 inches) for standard wardrobes.
The depth is fixed by the frame and door system, and the hinges and sliding mechanisms are designed accordingly. This means that individual depth adjustments are not possible without modifying the entire structure.
However, if space allows, you can place PAX units of different depths side by side or use accessories to optimize the internal layout. So, if you need flexible storage, I would rather recommend combining different modules cleverly or looking into furniture from another series that offers variable depths.
I hope this helps. If you have any questions about assembly or interior fittings, feel free to ask!

The depth is strictly determined by the frame and door system, and the hinges and sliding mechanisms integrated within are designed accordingly.Exactly!
I would like to add that this is typical for most modular furniture systems. Variability in PAX is mainly designed for width and height, while depth is hardly adjustable.
Even if you want to experiment, you quickly reach limits because doors and carcasses no longer fit properly, and the overall system loses stability.
So my conclusion is: A “variable depth” in the sense of continuously adjustable or adaptable depth does not exist for PAX. You are limited to the two depths provided by IKEA, and that’s it.
There are other manufacturers specializing in modular cabinet depths—but then we’re already off-topic from PAX!
