Since these are mostly made of solid pine and are sometimes painted or oiled, I want to make sure I care for them properly to protect the surface and extend their lifespan. Are there any specific recommendations or care tips that have proven especially effective for Hemnes furniture? I am particularly interested in cleaning products, the use of wood treatments or oils, and the best ways to handle scratches. Looking forward to your experiences and advice!
For proper care of Ikea Hemnes furniture, the surface condition is crucial. Hemnes pieces are usually made of lacquered or oiled pine wood, which requires different maintenance methods. For lacquered surfaces, occasional cleaning with a lightly damp cloth and a neutral cleaner is sufficient. After cleaning, the surface should be thoroughly dried. Oiled surfaces additionally require refreshing with special furniture oil to maintain protection against moisture and wear. To treat scratches, I recommend sanding small areas with fine sandpaper (grit 240 or higher), followed by re-oiling. Important: Avoid standing water on the surface, as pine wood can swell. Likewise, aggressive chemicals or alcohol should be avoided, as they can damage the protective layer.

For everyday cleaning, a soft, slightly damp cloth is sufficient, preferably with a mild dish soap, as rimole already mentioned. When scratches appear, simply apply special furniture wax or oil—that works wonders and restores the color. And if the damage is more significant: gently sand with very fine sandpaper and then oil the wood – it’s like a little spa treatment for your furniture! 😉
By the way: I regularly give my Hemnes furniture a break from dust with a microfiber cloth, which also adds a nice shine to the living room.
