Hello everyone,

I am currently planning to assemble some Ikea Hemnes shelves at home. While the instructions are generally clear, I noticed that some steps are a bit brief—especially when it comes to alignment and stability.

So, my question to the experienced DIYers here in the forum: Are there any specific tips or tricks you follow when installing HEMNES shelves to make them particularly stable and visually appealing on the wall?

I’m interested in advice both for preparation (tools, preparing the wall, etc.) and for the actual assembly—such as tips on how to best place the screws, or whether certain tools that aren’t mentioned in the Ikea manual are really necessary.

Also: Is it worthwhile to use additional brackets or reinforcements if the shelves will be heavily loaded?

I look forward to your detailed and honest experiences and suggestions, so I don’t make any mistakes and can mount the shelves perfectly.

Hello dimitrison,

First of all, I think it’s great that you’re considering stability and proper installation. The HEMNES shelves are generally quite sturdy, but the correct approach is indeed crucial.

Here are a few tips based on my experience:

- Make sure to use a suitable screwdriver or cordless drill. Setting the torque too high can damage the wood.
- For wall mounting, I recommend choosing the type of wall plug according to your wall material – for example, different plugs for drywall, concrete, or brick.
- The HEMNES shelves usually come with the necessary screws, but I have often used longer screws to ensure the brackets hold better.
- For alignment: regularly check with a spirit level, especially when attaching the brackets, to prevent the shelf from hanging unevenly.

Additional brackets are usually not necessary unless you plan to place extremely heavy items on the shelf. In that case, I would consider whether a wall shelf with metal supports might be more suitable.

If you have more detailed questions, I’m happy to help.

I think it’s important to critically ask what exactly you define as stable, dimitrison.

I would add: Have you checked where the load primarily acts? Is the weight mainly supported by the wall mounting, or is the shelf cantilevered?

Not every wall can bear the same amount of weight, and even the best anchor and screw systems won’t help if the wall is crumbly or uneven.

Therefore, I recommend a thorough wall inspection before installation—especially in older buildings. Also, it’s better to use several smaller anchors rather than a few large ones, as this distributes the load more effectively.

Additionally, a metal bracket underneath the shelf can help if additional load is expected. Ikea follows standard ratings, but individual conditions should always be considered.

Hey dimitrison!

I recently assembled a HEMNES shelf and can share some thoughts about the process: It’s not that complicated if you take your time and don’t try to do everything at once.

What helped me was loosely fitting all the parts together without any screws at first, just to see how they fit. This reduces stress and allows you to better estimate where the screws should go.

Absolutely a good idea! I also got a small spirit level that I kept handy the whole time. And another tip: Keep all your screws and tools in one fixed spot – that way you don’t lose anything and stay in the flow!

And if you ever feel unsure, a second pair of eyes often helps. It’s easy to overlook small details.

To complement, here are the essential facts for the optimal installation of Ikea HEMNES shelves:

- Preparation:
- Check the wall for load-bearing capacity. For drywall, I recommend using metal anchors or cavity wall anchors.
- Use an appropriate hammer drill for masonry walls; otherwise, use drill bits suitable for wood or metal depending on the substrate.

- Installation:
- Always insert screws at a right angle to avoid material damage.
- Insert screws for the wall brackets deep enough so they fit firmly but do not crush the wood.

- Stability:
- The brackets included in the delivery are sufficient for the maximum load specified by Ikea.
- For multiple heavy loads (e.g., books with heavy weights), additional metal brackets or fasteners can be added.

Conclusion: With the right choice of tools, thorough material assessment, and proper installation, a stable and secure fit can be achieved.

In my experience, the original anchors are fine, but it is essential to use a spirit level to hang the shelf straight. Otherwise, the rule is: tighten screws securely but do not overtighten.
