Hello everyone,

I am currently working on setting up our new bedroom and have chosen the Ikea Brimnes series, which is said to be quite popular and functional. Since we have young children, I want to make the bedroom as child-friendly as possible, especially regarding safety, usability, and storage options.

Does anyone have tips or experience on how to arrange the Brimnes bedroom to be as kid-friendly as possible? I’m particularly interested in aspects like the best choice of furniture combinations, protection from sharp corners or edges, additional storage solutions, or clever ways to store toys or clothes that make it especially easy and safe for children.

I look forward to helpful replies – perhaps also with practical examples. Thanks in advance!

Hello keosau51,

to make your Brimnes bedroom truly child-friendly, here is a short step-by-step guide:

1. Secure the furniture:
- Use the supplied wall anchors for all large furniture pieces.
- Check the stability of the bed frame and, if needed, add corner protectors made of silicone rubber.

2. Organize storage:
- Use the built-in drawers under the bed for clothing.
- Use small plastic boxes or fabric baskets on the shelves to keep toys easily accessible and organized.

3. Optimize child safety:
- Avoid open shelves if your child tends to be impatient. Closed compartments are safer.
- Install child-friendly handles, such as large grips that are easy to hold.

4. Keep the room tidy:
- Maintain neutral colors but include colorful storage boxes.

If you are interested, I can also send you a plan for the best combination of Brimnes furniture pieces for children’s rooms.

Where exactly would you like to store items: clothing, toys, or both?

Thank you for your detailed response. Actually, it’s both – so I need a systematic and safe way to store both clothes and toys.

I am especially considering whether the Brimnes bed with drawers will be enough, or if I will also need shelves or dressers.

I also place great importance on minimizing sharp edges for children and ensuring easy access to items. It would be ideal if harmful substances like formaldehyde are kept to a minimum, if anyone has experience with that.

I look forward to hearing more experiences and recommendations!

This is very important, especially as kids start to become more independent. Regarding harmful substances: Ikea states that they keep pollutant levels very low, particularly in newer Brimnes models. Nevertheless, I would recommend airing out the furniture well and, if you still have concerns, treating the wood beforehand with eco-friendly wood preservatives.

Now, about storage: the under-bed drawers are great for clothes, but for toys, I suggest additional bins or boxes that can be used flexibly and easily rearranged when needed.

As for the edges: most hardware stores or online retailers offer flexible corner protectors that you can apply exactly where children often bump into things.

I hope this helps!
