Torstendi2 Jun 2019 08:27Are there any DIY tips or tricks specifically for the fronts of IKEA Metod kitchen cabinets? I’m planning to slightly upgrade my kitchen without fully replacing the cabinet fronts. I’m mainly interested in durable, clean methods to change the appearance or to cover small blemishes. Has anyone had experience with painting, applying adhesive films, or similar techniques on these plastic or veneer fronts? It would also be important for me to know whether the grooves or handles can be integrated well into such work.
Oh yes, I recently updated my Metod fronts myself! 🙂 The important thing is to clean the fronts very thoroughly beforehand and then lightly sand them with fine-grit sandpaper (220 grit) so the paint adheres better. I used a special plastic primer, followed by a satin acrylic paint in the color of my choice. I removed my handles first, which makes the job easier! Go for it, it’s really fun, and you save a lot of money!
In addition to the previously mentioned procedure, I recommend paying attention to the following:
- Cleaning with a grease-dissolving, solvent-free cleaner
- Sanding only with very fine sandpaper to avoid damaging the foil
- Using an adhesion primer specifically designed for plastics
- Applying acrylic paints at a constant room temperature with adequate ventilation
This way, the risk of the paint peeling or cracking can be significantly reduced. Regarding the handles: it is best to completely remove them before working and reinstall them only after painting.

I’m happy to add a few tips based on experience:
Metod fronts are usually made of MDF with a foil or melamine coating. With foil fronts, the edges are often the weak point, where the finish can come off more easily. As an alternative to painting, you can also use self-adhesive foils, which are available at hardware stores and come in various designs. It is important that the surface is completely smooth and clean.
If you’re not very skilled with DIY, you might want to consider foil or magnetic fronts, which are easy to replace.
For damage or minor dents, special repair fillers for MDF can be used.

Demetrius2 Jun 2019 16:12I really appreciate how dedicated you are to this topic! I had my own doubts about whether painting would be durable, especially in a high-use area like the kitchen.
I have a question: How is the maintenance of the painted fronts in daily use? Are the colors sensitive to cleaning agents or moisture? I don’t want the great work to disappear after just a few weeks.
Perhaps some of you have already had similar experiences?

So, you shouldn’t use harsh abrasive cleaners.
- Wipe off light dirt with mild dish soap and a soft cloth
- For grease stains, you can use a specially formulated kitchen cleaner, but make sure to dilute it well
- Moisture shouldn’t be left standing on the surface for long
In short: Care for them like your regular kitchen fronts, just a bit more gently. For me, the finish has held up really well for several months now!
