Are there any DIY tips or tricks specifically for the fronts of IKEA Metod kitchen cabinets? I’m planning to slightly upgrade my kitchen without fully replacing the cabinet fronts. I’m mainly interested in durable, clean methods to change the appearance or to cover small blemishes. Has anyone had experience with painting, applying adhesive films, or similar techniques on these plastic or veneer fronts? It would also be important for me to know whether the grooves or handles can be integrated well into such work.

If you don’t want to paint, you can also use furniture foil. Simply apply it, whether the surface is smooth or textured. Make sure to prepare the surface well, keeping it dry and free of grease.

As an alternative to painting, self-adhesive films can also be used

I’m wondering how sustainable these films really are. So far, no one has mentioned what happens if moisture gets trapped under the film – that could lead to peeling or mold.

Also, how durable are these films compared to paint? Are there any reliable long-term studies or experiences? It seems to me that a critical evaluation is often missing before recommending them.

Film wrapping is definitely cheaper and quicker to apply, but it is more sensitive to mechanical stress and moisture! If the surface is clean and dry, it holds up fairly well, but I would only recommend film as a temporary solution.

Paint saves more money in the long run and looks really impressive, but of course, it takes more effort and some experience. Everyone to their own preference, but DIY is really fun, and you get better at it over time! 🙂
