Hello everyone,

I am currently planning to expand an IKEA KALLAX shelf unit, and I have the question: Is it possible to buy KALLAX panels individually? Specifically, I am interested in whether the individual shelves or dividers can be purchased separately to customize the shelf without having to buy an entirely new system.

If anyone has experience with whether IKEA itself or perhaps third-party suppliers offer such individual panels, I would be very grateful for any feedback. Tips on alternatives would also be great!

Thanks in advance!

Hello Luwarren,

I’m taking some time to provide a more detailed answer to your question.

IKEA does not sell KALLAX shelves individually. This is mainly because the frame is made up of several parts that ensure overall stability. This means the shelves are manufactured in a specific way and are often firmly attached to the sides.

For expansions or replacements, IKEA mostly offers complete units or set packages.

If you want to modify your shelving unit, here are some possible solutions:

1. DIY: You can have a suitable board cut to size at a hardware store (melamine-coated wood or laminate particleboard works well), exactly matching the required depth and thickness.

2. Secondhand market: Sometimes individual shelves can be found in forums or on online marketplaces.

3. Contact IKEA customer service: It’s worth asking if replacements are available in case of damage.

4. Choose alternative shelving systems that offer more flexible individual components.

I hope this helps, and good luck with your modification! 🙂

Cut them to size yourself or use new shelf dividers.

Just a quick addition:

If you want to build your own panel, pay attention to the edges. At IKEA, they are usually laminated or melamine-coated to make them durable and visually appealing.

A simple wooden board can otherwise look cheap very quickly.

Good explanation, that’s absolutely right!

I would add: if you’re not very skilled with DIY, also consider using self-adhesive films for the surface, which can make the assembled shelf look even nicer! :-)
