Hello everyone,
I am planning to equip my KALLAX shelf unit from IKEA with glass doors. My specific question is: Are there glass doors available for KALLAX, meaning matching glass doors that are sold specifically for the KALLAX shelf? If so, where is the best place to find them? So far, I have only seen wooden or fabric doors for KALLAX and nothing with glass.
I would appreciate any experiences and tips!

Sinan-meo8 Nov 2015 07:19Hello feridun63,
I would like to provide some brief technical advice:
For glass doors on KALLAX units, it is recommended to use glass door hinges specifically designed for thin safety glass (usually 4–6 mm (0.16–0.24 inches) thick). These hinges have a clamping function, so no screws through the glass are necessary.
The load on the doors should definitely be taken into account. KALLAX is not designed for very heavy doors, so experts generally recommend using lighter glass and exercising extra caution with large doors. Alternatively, acrylic (plexiglass) fronts could be an option—lighter weight with a similar appearance.
You can find technical specifications and suitable hinges at hardware stores or specialist retailers under the category "glass door fittings." They can often advise you on which fittings are compatible.

Glass door hinges designed specifically for thin safety glass\Exactly, I installed something like that recently, and it works well. Just make sure the hinges are sturdy enough and compatible with the glass thickness.
One more tip: if you don’t need an opening function, glass sliding doors can also be an alternative that simply runs along a track.
Does anyone here have experience with such sliding doors in the KALLAX?

Does anyone have a recommendation for hinges that work particularly well for glass doors on KALLAX units?I can share my personal experience: I used glass clamp hinges from "Blum," which can be easily mounted on wooden frames.
The hinges hold very securely and protect the glass at the same time. The only drawback is that installation requires patience and some craftsmanship, especially since the KALLAX unit itself does not have pre-drilled holes for doors.
What I did was attach hardwood strips to the sides of the shelving unit, which I then connected with the hinges to ensure stability.

Assembly requires patience and some craftsmanship skillsI can only agree with RATAR; this installation is not for beginners. However, if you want to save the cost of a carpenter, this can still be a very nice solution.
In short: IKEA does not offer glass doors for KALLAX, so other manufacturers or DIY solutions are needed. If you have little experience with woodworking, you might want to get some help.
