Hello everyone,

I am currently planning to equip an IKEA Kallax shelf unit with doors from the Besta system. I have a question regarding whether Kallax doors are generally compatible with the Besta shelving system or if there are any technical or mechanical limitations that might prevent installation.

Specifically, I am interested in whether the mounting points on Kallax doors and the Besta frames align, or if additional adapters or modifications are required. I would also like to know if anyone has experience with the stability and appearance of such a combination.

Are there any differences in door dimensions or hinges that should be taken into account? Any concrete tips or shared experiences would be really helpful for my planning.

Thanks in advance for your support!

No, Kallax doors do not fit on BESTA because the mounting systems are different.

For a secure installation, you will need adjustments or custom solutions.

I wouldn’t recommend it; it often looks inconsistent and is not very stable.

Hi vincenzolu,

I completely understand your question, as mixing up the doors in IKEA systems is quite common. Specifically, Kallax and BESTA actually have different hardware systems and hole spacing. Kallax modules are designed more for snap-in fittings, while BESTA modules use European-style hinges that require different mounting points.

This means you can’t simply attach Kallax doors to a BESTA cabinet. For a secure and stable door installation, you either need specially adapted hinges or a full modification solution. This can quickly become complicated, especially if you want to maintain a clean look.

If you’re looking for doors for a BESTA system, I recommend using original BESTA doors. They match perfectly in size and hardware. If you are after a certain front style or color, there are also suitable third-party alternatives available.

I hope this helps with your planning! 🙂

I agree, although I think IKEA deliberately limits compatibility here to encourage more sales.

But especially regarding the hole spacing, with some skill and craftsmanship, it’s possible to modify and put something together; it’s not technically impossible.

I believe this whole topic highlights once again how limited IKEA is in the modularity of their systems – maximum sales, minimal combinability.

So if someone really wants to use Kallax doors with BESTA, they shouldn’t look for the standard solution but experiment with custom adjustments and not be limited by official guidelines.

Most “regular” users probably won’t do this, but I see an exciting DIY challenge here! 😉
