Hello everyone,

I recently installed an IKEA METOD kitchen unit and now face the challenge of properly aligning and adjusting the cabinet doors so that they close perfectly and the gaps are even all around.

My question is a bit more detailed: How exactly do I adjust the METOD doors to achieve a perfect fit, especially considering that the cabinets might be installed on uneven floors and the doors can hang differently depending on their size and weight?

Are there specific adjustment points on the hinges that I should pay particular attention to? What is the best way to compensate for any warping or uneven gaps? And which tools are helpful for this process?

I look forward to your tips, preferably as detailed as possible, since this is my first time doing it and I want to achieve a professional look. Thanks in advance!

Hello JARike,

I completely understand your question, as the correct adjustment of the METOD door really determines whether the kitchen looks professional in the end or not. In general, METOD hinges are very adjustable, and each hinge offers three adjustment options:

- Depth adjustment: This allows you to set the distance of the door between the front panel and the cabinet frame.
- Height adjustment: Used to precisely align the door height, which is especially important when you have several doors next to each other.
- Side adjustment: To compensate for lateral shifts and keep the gaps between the doors consistent and even.

My tip: Start with the height adjustment. First, align all doors so their top and bottom edges are on the same level. This is usually done via the screws on the hinge, which can be easily reached with a screwdriver.

After that, you can use the side adjustment to ensure the gaps between the doors are even. When you fine-tune this, you’ll notice how precise you can work down to the millimeter.

As for tools: A simple Phillips screwdriver is usually enough. Additionally, a spirit level and a measuring tape can help check the cabinet’s straightness. If the floor is uneven, it can make sense to level the cabinets with shims or adjustable feet before adjusting the doors.

If the doors are very large or heavy, it’s worth removing the hinges completely and readjusting them with more leverage or force. Always be careful when doing this to avoid any damage.

I hope this helps you. If you want, I can also give you some tips on how to avoid common mistakes when adjusting.

This is very useful information! Here is a step-by-step guide for aligning IKEA METOD doors that I often use:

- Step 1: First, check the cabinet frame. A stable, level carcass is essential – if the floor is uneven, adjust the kickboards or feet accordingly to create a solid, level base.

- Step 2: Hang the doors loosely. Attach the hinges but do not fully secure them yet, so you can adjust them easily.

- Step 3: Start by adjusting the height – use the screw near the hinge pivot point to move the door vertically until all doors align evenly.

- Step 4: Side adjustment – this screw controls the horizontal movement. Especially with multiple doors next to each other, this ensures even gaps.

- Step 5: Depth adjustment – this allows you to move the door closer to or away from the cabinet to create a clean front surface.

- Step 6: Test the door movement – open and close the doors to make sure none are sticking or rubbing.

Common mistakes include:

- Hinges tightened too much or too loosely, preventing fine adjustment.
- Ignoring floor unevenness, which leads to doors being crooked later.
- Adjusting doors one by one instead of all at once, causing uneven gaps in the end.

One more tip: After the initial adjustment, marking the screw positions lightly with a pencil can help you return to your exact settings if needed.

I hope this guide helps clarify the process!

How exactly do I adjust the METOD doors to achieve a perfect fit, especially considering that the cabinets may be placed on uneven floors and the doors hang differently depending on their size and weight?

This is a well-formulated question that I really appreciate because it addresses critical parameters. Here is my detailed approach to achieving an excellent fit with METOD doors:

1. Preparation: Make sure the floor surface is as level as possible. You can use a precision spirit level and a laser level to position the cabinet and, if necessary, place small shims under the feet. Irregularities greater than 2mm (0.08 inches) should be compensated for.

2. Hinge technique: The METOD hinges are sturdy and allow for precise adjustments. Use a protractor to roughly align the door parallel to the cabinet first. Be careful: the hinge position on the cabinet frame must not be shifted, as this would make adjustment more difficult.

3. Adjustment steps:
- Start with the height adjustment to bring all doors to the same level. Small height differences are immediately noticeable.
- Then adjust sideways to achieve uniform gaps. A gap of about 2-3 mm (0.08-0.12 inches) between the doors is ideal.
- Proceed with the depth adjustment to align the doors flush with the cabinet front, especially if toe kicks or front panels are installed.

4. Load distribution: Larger doors tend to warp, especially with wood or MDF surfaces. In these cases, it helps to secure the hinges at multiple points and, if needed, add extra hinges if the IKEA standard size is insufficient.

5. Final check: Use a thin gap gauge to measure and verify that all gaps are consistent. Also, test opening and closing the doors multiple times to check for any resistance.

Recommended tools:
- Phillips screwdriver with good grip
- Spirit level, laser level
- Gap gauge or fine caliper
- Pencil for marking

A small side note: If you receive doors that are warped or imperfect from the factory, it’s worth checking before assembly to save a lot of effort later.
