Hello everyone, I recently purchased the Ikea Platsa furniture system and I’m unsure how often I should clean it. The surfaces are not completely smooth but rather matte lacquered, and the furniture often consists of several different materials, such as fiberboard, plastic, and metal parts. I would like to know if there are any recommendations for cleaning frequency, especially under everyday conditions in a normally used apartment without heavy dirt. I’m also interested in whether there are specific cleaning products that should definitely be used or avoided to preserve the materials in the long term. Are there differences between open shelves and closed cabinet doors? I look forward to your experiences or tips!

Johnathon9 Aug 2015 20:07Hello Sonja, your question about the optimal cleaning frequency for Ikea PLATSA furniture is quite valid, as these pieces are somewhat special due to their modular system and various materials. Basically, when cleaning, you should distinguish between regular surface care and thorough deep cleaning.
In practice, I recommend wiping the furniture every 1-2 weeks with a soft, slightly damp cloth to remove dust and light dirt. It is important that you do not use harsh cleaning agents or solvents, as these can damage the matte finish. Mild dish soap water is usually sufficient.
For tougher stains, such as grease marks or adhesive residue, you can use a gentle all-purpose cleaner, but please use it sparingly and test it first on an inconspicuous area.
Regarding closed cabinet doors, these are usually less sensitive to dust; however, dust and dirt tend to accumulate behind them. Therefore, I recommend opening these every six months and cleaning the inside with a vacuum cleaner plus a damp cloth. Open shelves, on the other hand, need more frequent cleaning, as dust settles more quickly.
Finally, a question for you: Do you have children or pets that might shorten the cleaning intervals?

I would like to add to John’s points, as the type of surface and environmental conditions play an important role with PLATSA furniture. The matte lacquered surfaces tend to show water spots or streaks from cleaning agents if not wiped completely dry.
Therefore, I recommend a multi-step cleaning process:
- First, gently dust with a dry microfiber cloth.
- Then carefully wipe with a mildly damp cloth using mild cleaning water.
- Immediately afterward, polish with a clean, dry cloth.
Avoid using corrosive cleaners and abrasive cloths or sponges to prevent scratching. For metal handles and fittings, it is also best to use a separate damp cloth without additives.
My personal routine is to clean heavily used surfaces weekly, while less frequently used parts can be cleaned every 3–4 weeks. A deep cleaning inside closed units once a year is sufficient.
It would also be helpful to know which room you are using your PLATSA furniture in (living room, study, kitchen?), as the amount of dust and grease buildup can vary.

One last question for you: Do you have children or pets that might shorten the cleaning intervals?Good question! No, I don’t have children or pets in the household, so exposure to dirt is rather moderate. The furniture is in the living room and partly in the hallway, where dust often settles on the open shelves. I don’t have a PLATSA in the kitchen, so grease shouldn’t be a major issue there. Your suggestions are already very helpful, thank you!
I find it problematic that many recommendations are rather general and hardly take actual usage into account. For example, why should cleaning be done every two weeks if dust is not visible or there is hardly any contact?
This is an important point that I believe is often overlooked. Instead of frequent cleaning, it is better to focus on gentle and thorough cleaning to avoid long-term damage and unnecessary rework.
In any case, one should avoid exposing the material to aggressive substances, as PLATSA can quickly lose its visual appeal if treated too roughly. Have you had any experience with special furniture care products for matte surfaces, or are they rather counterproductive?
