Hello everyone, I recently purchased the Ikea Platsa furniture system and I’m unsure how often I should clean it. The surfaces are not completely smooth but rather matte lacquered, and the furniture often consists of several different materials, such as fiberboard, plastic, and metal parts. I would like to know if there are any recommendations for cleaning frequency, especially under everyday conditions in a normally used apartment without heavy dirt. I’m also interested in whether there are specific cleaning products that should definitely be used or avoided to preserve the materials in the long term. Are there differences between open shelves and closed cabinet doors? I look forward to your experiences or tips!

Have you had any experience with special furniture care products for matte surfaces, or are they more of a problem?

I have some experience since I often carry out furniture maintenance professionally: Special furniture care products can actually alter the appearance of a matte surface by reducing the matte effect or emphasizing stains. That’s why they are often not very practical for matte finishes like those on the Platsa system.

In practice, I therefore recommend using simple, mild water-based cleaning agents rather than waxes or polishes. These can seal the surface, which in some cases might cause uneven shine.

Regarding frequency, there is no fixed rule – it depends heavily on living conditions, dust exposure, and usage. As mentioned, for living areas without children or pets, a more thorough cleaning once a month combined with regular dusting by wiping is most effective.

How sensitive have you found your furniture so far? Are there areas that get dirtier or more damaged faster?

I really appreciate how everyone here shares their experiences in such detail. Sonja, I can totally understand how uncertain you can feel sometimes, especially when you consciously choose and want to take good care of furniture like PLATSA.

It’s only natural to be cautious with new items and to find the right balance between cleaning and preserving them. From my experience, you gradually get used to your own routine — just checking every few weeks whether the exposed surfaces are dusty or if there are any visible marks.

And if you ever feel unsure: a gentle damp cloth usually doesn’t cause any harm, as long as it’s not too wet and you don’t use harsh products. That provides a sense of comfort without damaging the furniture.

So don’t feel pressured; do what works best for you. After all, furniture is meant to make everyday life more enjoyable.

I follow this routine: dust every two weeks and clean immediately if there is visible dirt. For PLATSA, do not use aggressive cleaners—only water or a mild soap solution. This method has proven effective and is practical.
