Hello everyone,

I have a specific question that probably concerns many Pax wardrobe users: Are there any Ikea hack ideas to create more storage space inside Pax wardrobes that are truly practical and effective?

I’m especially interested in creative ways to use the existing interior space more efficiently without compromising stability or appearance. For example, I’m considering whether adding extra shelves, flexible drawer inserts, or clever partition systems could modularly increase storage capacity in the Pax. Suggestions for lesser-known modifications that are easy to implement but still provide noticeable extra storage would also be very welcome.

What are your experiences? Do you have tips or DIY hacks that have worked particularly well for you?

Thanks in advance!

Hello Monika,

Regarding your question about Ikea hacks specifically for adding more storage in the Pax wardrobe, I have some practical suggestions that I will explain step by step:

- Additional shelves: Ikea sells extra shelves that you can easily place between the existing carcass rails. When ordering, make sure to choose the correct depth and width.

- Drawer systems from the SKUBB or VARIERA series: These are ideal for better utilizing free cabinet space and keeping your clothes or accessories organized.

- Installation of inner drawers or baskets: There are compatible drawers and wire baskets that you can attach to the side walls. This creates double-layered storage space that you wouldn’t otherwise have.

- Use of inner door surfaces: Small hook rails or organizers add extra storage for belts, scarves, or jewelry.

- Pull-out boxes: Pay attention to the dimensions so they fit perfectly and are easy to handle.

Installation tips:
- Measure carefully before ordering additional shelves.
- Make sure not to exceed the load capacity of the added elements to avoid deformation.

If you like, I can also suggest the best ways to combine these elements. For what type of items are you planning to create the extra space most urgently?

I think this is a key point. Often, the general advice is simply to add more shelves or boxes, but I find the reasoning behind the long-term benefits is missing here.

My suggestion: Before you modify the Pax system, you should carefully analyze what you really want to store inside. Creating more storage isn’t helpful if accessibility suffers or the clothes rods become unusable.

Therefore, I would recommend first categorizing your types of items (clothes, shoes, accessories, seasonal items, etc.) and tailoring your modification ideas accordingly.

For example:
- For shoes: pull-out drawers or sliding shoe racks.
- For folded clothes: adjustable shelves or storage boxes.
- For long-hanging garments: double hanging rods, if there is enough height.

A modification idea by itself is often less helpful without context.

Hey, really interesting topic!

A while ago, I got myself a Pax wardrobe and, with a bit of creativity, managed to optimize the interior even more. Here are some casual tips:

- Buy drawer slides separately and build your own drawers. This is great for storing small items efficiently.
- Attach magnetic strips to the inside of the doors for jewelry or small metal objects – more useful than you might think.

It’s important to install them carefully so nothing rattles or rubs against the sides, otherwise you'll end up dealing with Ikea’s typical stiffness for a while. 🙂

Feel free to ask if you’re looking for something specific!

I would therefore suggest first breaking down the types of items (clothing, shoes, accessories, seasonal items, etc.) and tailoring the storage ideas specifically to them.

That is a very good point and aligns well with my experience. Indeed, it makes sense to plan your Pax interior layout based on how you intend to use it.

Building on that, I would recommend a structured approach:

- Analyze the existing clothing and accessories (frequency of use, type, size)
- Measure the Pax interior space, including the height and depth of the compartments
- Modular fittings, such as hanging drawers that are also easily accessible
- Use of integrated baskets or dividers for seasonal clothing items

Additionally, you might consider redesigning the doors, for example with sliding doors featuring built-in organizer fronts. This creates extra storage space without reducing the interior volume of the wardrobe.

What exactly is your Pax configuration? Size, type of doors, already installed components?

Thanks for the detailed posts and questions – I’ll try to respond specifically:

My Pax wardrobe is 150 cm (59 inches) wide, 58 cm (23 inches) deep, and 236 cm (93 inches) high, with two standard hinged doors. Inside, I have a clothes rail at the top and below that two large shelves; the rest is mostly open space with a drawer unit at the bottom.

My goal is to use the space between the floor and the clothes rail more efficiently, as I mainly store folded clothing there that can be stacked vertically, but ventilation and organization are often lacking. I’m also interested in hacks to better utilize the unused back panel without compromising stability.

I definitely don’t want to change the overall character of the wardrobe too much or make it look “DIY” in a negative way. Therefore, I’m especially interested in integrated solutions based on Ikea components or those that can be easily done as simple DIY projects without damaging the furniture.
