ᐅ My Kallax shelf has been leaning on its original legs for years – anyone else experienced this?

SevescoHello everyone,
I have an IKEA Kallax shelving unit with the original legs that can be screwed underneath. My problem is that the shelf has been slightly tilted on these legs for several years. It doesn’t wobble, but the tilt is noticeable when you look at it. It’s not serious, but it bothers me because I know it should actually stand straight. The legs are properly installed, the floor is level, and I’ve also tried setting up the shelf empty – the tilt remains.
Now my question to you: Have you had similar experiences with the original Kallax legs? Is it a quality issue with these legs, or could the floor or the assembly be to blame? If you have any solutions to fix the tilt, I would appreciate your tips. I’d prefer not to rebuild the entire shelf since it is basically quite stable.
Thanks in advance!

Have you had similar experiences with the original Kallax feet? That’s an interesting question, as these original feet are often quite simply designed and not always ideal for every type of floor. Here’s a more detailed overview based on my experience:
First, make sure that all the feet are tightened evenly. Even small differences when screwing them in can cause a slight tilt. Furthermore, the feet offer minimal adjustability, but most IKEA feet of this type do not have real height adjustment – which makes it difficult to compensate for minor unevenness in the floor.
Another point is that the floor itself is often irregular. Especially in older buildings, floors are rarely perfectly level, and sometimes just a few millimeters (inches) can make a difference. Because of its small contact points and point loads, the Kallax shelving unit sometimes does not sit perfectly flat.
If the tilt is critical for you, you might consider replacing the feet with higher-quality adjustable furniture glides. These have screws and rubber pads that can be adjusted with millimeter (inch) precision. Alternatively, I’ve seen some users glue small plastic or felt pads under the feet to make very minor corrections.
One more question for you: Is the shelf placed directly against the wall? If so, securing it to the wall could solve the problem or at least reduce the perception of the tilt.
I hope this helps so far. If you want, you can also describe exactly how the feet are attached – for example, which version of the original feet you have, as there are different variants available.

I would also approach this with a bit of humor: a crooked shelf just adds character and shows that home doesn’t have to be perfect 🙂 But of course, you probably don’t want it to stay crooked forever if it bothers you.
Small adjustable feet with rubber are great because they not only level the furniture but also protect the floor and provide non-slip support.
Just as a side note: if you hang the shelf on the wall or secure it with a mounting rail, you can usually compensate for the tilt, as the wall will keep everything stable – this is also a safe way to prevent wobbling.
I hope you find the right balance between perfection and the cozy character of your Kallax 🙂 Good luck!
