I would like to start a discussion on the topic: "How can the stability of the Ikea Hemnes furniture, especially the large wardrobes and dressers, be effectively improved?"

I own several Hemnes pieces that I appreciate, but especially under heavier loads or intense use, I notice that the stability is not optimal. This concerns not only the firmness of the base but also possible reinforcement to reduce rattling and the risk of tipping.

Does anyone have professional or DIY tips that go beyond the usual screws and glue methods? Which materials or techniques have proven effective? Are there any experiences with additional bracing, alternative fastening materials, or even modifications to the structure?

I look forward to your well-founded suggestions and advice!

Basically, stability in relatively affordable furniture like the Hemnes series is a balancing act between material quality and construction. But I wonder: What specific weak points have you identified? A generic "just screw it tighter" does not always achieve the desired result.

Has anyone specifically examined the quality of the back panel? This is often a crucial aspect. Especially in Ikea furniture, thin fiberboard panels are used for the back, which can quickly give way. It might be worth reinforcing them with plywood or even metal brackets at the corners.

I’m curious if anyone can demonstrate this convincingly with evidence or photos before blindly incurring additional material costs.

Based on my experience as a DIY enthusiast, I can offer some guidance on how to improve the stability of Hemnes furniture, especially cabinets and dressers:

- First, check all connections: screws and dowels should be tightened securely—a loose joint significantly affects stability.
- The thin hardboard backing can be replaced with a 4 mm (5/32 inch) plywood sheet—this material is much more stable and prevents warping and wobbling.
- Additionally, metal brackets (flat steel strips or L-brackets) can be installed on the inside corners to irreversibly reinforce the frame.
- A simple measure is also to secure the furniture to the wall, for example with suitable angle hooks—this almost completely eliminates the risk of tipping.

Common mistakes to avoid include applying too much glue, which later becomes brittle, or using cheap screws that loosen from the wood. Investing in quality pays off here!

I hope this provides a clear and structured starting point.

I can definitely relate to the problem, as I also have a Hemnes dresser that rattles and feels slightly wobbly under heavy load. It’s a bit frustrating when you want to comfortably set up your home and the furniture doesn’t quite keep up.

What helped me was making the back panel a bit thicker and adding wooden strips along the inside edges. This made the entire piece feel much sturdier, and I finally got a sense of stability.

Sometimes it’s also an emotional factor: when the furniture is solid, you just feel more comfortable in the room, don’t you?

Hopefully, I can find more practical suggestions here to make the Hemnes even stronger.

I would like to address the basic principles that help improve the stability of IKEA furniture like Hemnes:

- First, it is important to place the furniture on a level and solid surface. Unevenness can cause annoying wobbling.
- The back panel plays a key role in stability. The original thin hardboard panel can be replaced with a thicker panel or reinforced with an additional frame if needed.
- Screws and connectors should be checked regularly and tightened if necessary, as wood can deform slightly under load.
- Wall mounting is not only important for safety to prevent tipping but also significantly strengthens the furniture mechanically.

These tips are proven and encourage achieving great results with small measures. If you have any questions, I am happy to help!

Hello everyone! I love my Hemnes shelf and I really want to encourage you to improve its stability to make all your furniture more durable and safer!

I added felt pads with rubber inserts under the feet to prevent slipping and to help it stand more securely. Additionally, I reinforced the connection points with small metal brackets that are very easy to install.

The best part: it costs almost nothing and is a lot of fun to customize your furniture! 🙂

A little bit of DIY effort is definitely worth it!
