Hello everyone,

I have a rather specific question about spare parts for IKEA Hemnes dressers. More precisely, I want to know: based on your experience, which spare parts are truly important and commonly needed when repairing or maintaining a Hemnes dresser?

I’m not referring to general spare parts like screws, but rather the components that typically show the most wear or often cause problems.

For example, I’m thinking of drawer slides, handles, back panels, or special fasteners. Who has detailed experience with this? Which parts should you keep on hand to ensure your Hemnes dresser is well-maintained and can be restored over time?

And very importantly: are there quality differences between original parts and third-party alternatives that should be considered?

Looking forward to your opinions and tips!

Hello TAU66,

first of all, a very well-structured question that also leaves room for many detailed aspects.

From my experience with the Hemnes series – I have maintained and repaired several dressers over the years – the following replacement parts stand out as particularly relevant:

- Drawer slides (metal rails with ball bearings): The mechanism here wears out the fastest, either due to dirt or bent rails. There are sometimes significant differences between original IKEA parts and aftermarket replacements. Originals are often more durable and better fitting.

- Wooden or metal handles: These can often break or become loose over time. IKEA replacements can be more expensive, while third-party suppliers offer affordable alternatives; I recommend checking the fit carefully.

- Back panels: In Hemnes furniture, the back panel is often made of thin wood or MDF, which can easily crack or warp. Replacement parts for these are useful for stabilization.

- Screws and connector fittings (e.g., furniture screws, dowels): I always recommend keeping original parts in stock, as they often have special sizes or threads that aftermarket suppliers do not exactly match.

A small tip: If the dresser is older, it’s worth checking the drawer slides for damage. In repairs, I usually replace them with complete slide sets.

One more question for you: What types of damage or repairs have you encountered so far? That could help provide more targeted recommendations.

Hello TAU66,

you have defined the topic very well, which makes the response more helpful. In addition to the previous post, I would like to add a few practical tips:

- Drawer slides are really the main point of criticism for Hemnes dressers. If the drawers are stiff or stick, it is almost always due to worn-out rails.

- The back panel may seem less important at first glance, but I once encountered a case where moisture or heavy load caused it to deteriorate, which then affected the stability. Replacement back panels are often available at a low cost.

- For the screws, you should really use original parts, as IKEA often uses special screws that do not fit in replicas.

- Furniture hinges (for example, on Hemnes doors) are also considered vulnerable parts and should be replaced if they creak or function poorly.

Regarding quality, in my opinion, it is generally advisable to prefer original replacement parts for IKEA, especially for moving parts like slides and hinges. You can often save money on handles since they experience less mechanical stress.

If you like, I can also prepare an overview of comparable replacement parts suitable for a typical Hemnes dresser.

I see this a bit differently. Certainly, IKEA sometimes uses special screws, but I think the idea that only original screws will work is overstated.

It should be noted that replicas can often be just as solid, sometimes even more durable because manufacturers use different materials. IKEA offers great value for money, not premium quality. Paying for expensive original-quality replacement parts? I’m not sure if that’s always the best choice.

And regarding the back panel: it hardly affects stability and only slightly reduces material warping. If you really want strength, you need to focus on the frame.

My point is: sticking exclusively to originals may waste a lot of potential in terms of cost and durability.

My advice to TAU66: simply check how local replacement parts for furniture perform – with a bit of care and testing, you can manage quite well.
