Hello everyone,

I am currently exploring how to make the popular Ikea PAX wardrobe system more child-friendly. Specifically, I want to focus on safety, ease of use for children, and adaptability to changing needs.

I am interested in which modifications or additions are recommended to make PAX not only functional but also safe for children, for example through locks, rounded edges, as well as user-friendly features like easily accessible compartments or handles that are easy and fun to operate.

Are there any experiences with special inserts that organize storage in a child-appropriate way? Also, how about stability and installation – are there particular precautions to take to prevent the wardrobe from tipping over during active play?

I look forward to concrete tips, experiences, and possibly suggestions for alternative solutions that make the PAX wardrobe a child-appropriate piece of furniture.

For added safety, you should install tilt locks that are securely fastened to both the cabinet and the wall.

Child-safe handles without sharp edges are a good choice.

Another option is internal inserts with compartments to prevent small items from falling out.

This is an important approach because PAX, with its modular design, offers both great potential and challenges.

From a technical perspective, I recommend first softening all sharp edges with chamfers or silicone edge protectors. Unfortunately, Ikea does not always provide rounded edges, so external edge guards are advisable.

Regarding tip-over safety, I strongly recommend secure wall fixings. This is not optional but necessary since PAX can easily tip over when loaded, especially if children pull on it or climb.

For the interior, using drawers instead of doors is useful because they are easier for children to operate. Additionally, this provides better visibility and prevents items from falling out.

Another helpful solution is color-coded organization systems for different toys or clothing that children can easily recognize and sort.

I wonder: What age are the children for whom the wardrobe is being adapted? This greatly affects the choice of wardrobe height and the internal layout.

This is indeed a crucial point. Child safety must be considered according to age.

Additionally, I would like to add that the assembly instructions from Ikea are often designed only for standard configurations. For a childproof version, it is advisable to plan for additional attachments such as anti-tip kits and possibly extra locks.

A proven practical improvement is the installation of drawers with a soft-close mechanism to prevent finger injuries.

Regarding usability: handles located in the lower part of the cabinet should be ergonomic and easy to grasp. Open compartments or low drawers provide better access for young children.

A combination of lockable upper sections (for hazardous items) and open access lower sections makes sense.

It is also advisable to choose materials that are easy to clean, as children's rooms tend to get dirty quickly.
