Hello everyone, I have several Billy bookcases from IKEA, and I've noticed that some of the shelves wobble a bit or sag slightly in the middle. I'm interested in how to permanently prevent Billy shelves from wobbling or sagging. I’m specifically referring to the standard shelves without any additional reinforcements or metal inserts. Does anyone know of proven methods or useful hacks to make the shelves more stable without major modifications to the bookcase? Thanks for your tips!

Here’s what worked for me: At the hardware store, there are thin metal brackets that you can attach to the underside of the shelf. They act as additional reinforcement and stop any wobbling. Just attach them to the longer shelves.

To precisely prevent sagging, it is important to consider the actual load on the shelves from a physical perspective. The maximum recommended load of about 30 kg on an 80 cm (31.5 inches) wide BILLY shelf is close to the maximum bending strength of the MDF board.

A simple technical adjustment: attaching an additional crosswise strip under the shelf – in the middle – improves load distribution and reduces stress. Additionally, the attachment of the shelf supports should be checked to ensure they are securely anchored in the wall. Wall mounting also increases overall stability. If necessary, you can switch to shelves made of solid wood or plywood instead of standard MDF, as these tend to sag significantly less.

My tip: Use shelf supports with metal reinforcement instead of the usual plastic ones. They hold the shelves more securely and prevent wobbling and sagging.

Here is a summary:

I always use wooden strips and screw them centered under the shelves.

This is probably the best DIY solution with minimal effort.

A good option if you prefer to use metal.

Reinforcement with a central support [...] Alternatively, a thin plywood panel can be mounted under the MDF shelf.

This explains technically that the choice of materials makes a difference.

Finally, it is important that the shelf is securely fixed to the wall to prevent wobbling.

Heiner48, if you want, I can also provide a step-by-step guide on installing a central wooden strip. In my experience, this kind of reinforcement is the most effective way to prevent sagging and wobbling.
