Hello everyone,

I am facing the challenge of not only reorganizing my IKEA METOD kitchen cabinets during a home renovation but also modifying them quickly and flexibly to fit new room layouts. I would like to rely on proven methods that allow fast adjustments without having to completely dismantle everything or invest in expensive new components.

I am especially interested in how you modify the cabinets to keep them modular, for example when changing installation heights, adding shelves, or relocating doors. Which tools are most effective, and what are the common pitfalls to watch out for during fastening or assembly?

Perhaps you also have experience with temporarily modifying the cabinets with minimal effort, so they can be easily adapted later to a new kitchen setup?

I look forward to your tips and experiences!

Hello DUWAYNE,

Thank you for your detailed question. I can understand how frustrating a renovation can be when the cabinets are rigid structures. I once remodeled my METOD units during a kitchen renovation and was surprised by how modular the system actually is.

At that time, I made a habit of first loosening all connections and screws with a cordless drill set to the correct torque, which made the work much faster. I also found it important not to fix the individual cabinets too firmly, as this makes it difficult to rearrange them flexibly later on.

What I found challenging, however, was adding additional shelves afterwards because the holes for the dowels are preset and you can't just drill new ones without risking stability.

How is it looking for you? Are you planning to build completely new shelving units, or do you want to work with the existing hole patterns?

I want to revisit this because repositioning the doors on METOD cabinets can actually be a bit tricky. I've often noticed that although the doors have multiple pre-routed holes for the fittings, relocating them sometimes requires additional drilling. This carries the risk of damaging the cabinet front or misaligning the holes.

How do you handle this, DUWAYNE? Do you use any templates or special tools for this, or do you rely on standard instructions?

Hello everyone here! :-)

I just wanted to share how much fun it is to work with METOD! Especially if you want to stay flexible, this system is great because the modules are always based on the same grid.

I highly recommend making a small checklist of exactly what you want to adjust during the renovation – this really helped me keep track!

- You can quickly slide in intermediate shelves if you use the right anchors.
- Changing doors is quick if you loosen the hinges and fit them to the new position.
- Sometimes I even changed the door swings to align the modules better side by side!

Take advantage of the variety METOD offers, it’s worth it! If you need tips for quick modifications, I’m happy to help!

Hello DUWAYNE & community,

I would like to explain in more detail how to efficiently modify METOD cabinets during renovations, especially when dealing with new installation heights and variables. Here is my approach in several steps:

1. First, always check the frame construction – often you can save or reposition side panels if you support stability with cross braces.

2. Adjust the shelves: with holes like those in METOD, you need a special 5-mm (0.2 inch) drill bit for the dowels. Be careful when redrilling, as the material can easily splinter. I recommend pre-drilling pilot holes with a thinner drill bit.

3. Doors and fittings: METOD hinges can be adjusted in all directions, which is very helpful when relocating them. If new holes are necessary, you should pre-drill and use plastic plugs.

4. Tools: For me, a cordless drill-driver with a torque clutch is essential. Also, a small laser level for alignment.

5. When assembling the modules, remember not to tighten the connecting bolts too much, so they won’t get damaged during future adjustments.

I’m curious, which specific modifications do you, DUWAYNE, prioritize most for your cabinets? Do you prefer wall mounting or floor mounting, and are you working with corner units or standard modules?

Hello DUWAYNE,

I can confirm that METOD is very flexible once you understand the basics. It is especially important to always pay close attention to the pre-drilled holes, as the entire hanging system and the shelves depend on these hole distances.

Regarding shelves: If you need new positions, there are so-called shelf supports that can simply be inserted into the hole pattern, allowing you to place the shelf on them. This is very quick and does not require additional drilling.

For doors, you should also make sure that adjusting the hinges to the new positions matches the correct side offset. Sometimes the adjustments are not symmetrical, which can cause issues.

If you want, I can explain the basics in more detail. Especially for beginners, understanding the materials is important to avoid damage.
