Hello everyone,

I am currently facing an issue with the KALLAX shelving unit from Ikea: the compartment dimensions on my model differ significantly from the stated 33x33 cm (13x13 inches), with some measurements being several millimeters too small or too large. This makes fitting standardized boxes and inserts very difficult. Has anyone else experienced this and perhaps successfully managed a claim or return?

I am especially interested to know whether Ikea is flexible when insisting on the correct dimensions, or if you usually have to resolve these fit problems directly with customer service.

Thanks in advance for your insights and advice!

This is an unfortunately common observation with KALLAX, as the shelving unit is now produced in multiple manufacturing sites. Tolerances of a few millimeters are, from a technical perspective, not unusual for wood-based materials used in furniture construction.

A complaint is certainly possible if the size difference is substantial and affects functionality. It is important that you document the defect precisely, preferably with measurements of several compartments and a comparison to the product description.

I would recommend contacting Ikea directly and clearly pointing out the lack of fit and its consequences. They often respond fairly to customer complaints about such quality issues, especially if you insist on a replacement.

As a supplement:

The problem arises because Ikea lists its KALLAX unit with a nominal grid size of 33 cm (13 inches), but in practice, manufacturing tolerances can vary by up to +/- 5 mm (0.2 inches). Engineered wood and particleboard also respond to moisture, so seasonal fluctuations can affect the dimensions.

According to the general terms and conditions, a complaint is possible if the deviation significantly limits usability. However, these measurements must be clearly documented and taken immediately upon receipt of the shelving unit to prove the defect.

My advice: Before contacting Ikea, the measurement issue should be thoroughly documented. If Ikea is accommodating, they usually offer at least an exchange for another model or a refund upon return.

Hey alisonje,

wow, I had a similar experience! It really stressed me out at first because I assumed the measurements would be standard as stated. But, as it turned out, after a few calls to Ikea and explaining the situation in detail, I was able to return my shelf without any problems and even received a small compensation. 🙂

Absolutely true! I think it’s definitely worth persisting. Don’t be afraid of customer service 😉 Sometimes you just need to stay polite but firm, and things will work out!

Fingers crossed you find a good solution too! You’ve got this :-)
