Hello everyone, I recently ordered the BILLY cabinet from IKEA and want to plan the assembly well. That’s why I have a specific question for those who have already put together the BILLY: How long does it usually take you to fully assemble it? I’m interested not only in the actual assembly time, meaning screwing the parts together, but also the preparation, unpacking, and fitting it into the desired corner or room. Of course, this probably varies depending on the model size and experience, but a general estimate would be very helpful. Do you work alone or with two people? Do you use any additional tools or only the ones provided? I’m looking forward to your experiences and tips so I can plan better. Thanks in advance!

Having two people is definitely helpful, especially when lifting and securing the unit to the wall. Regarding tools, I recommend using a ratcheting screwdriver to save some time. A cordless drill speeds up the process, but it's not essential for the BILLY assembly.

Most importantly, make sure to mount the unit to the wall for stability and safety.

Are there any specifics about the assembly location? Tight spaces can unnecessarily extend the assembly time.

That’s fantastic!!! I assembled the BILLY all by myself last month in about 1.5 hours (1.5 hours), using just my small cordless drill, which really made the job easier :-)

For me, the most challenging part was fitting it into the corner because my floor isn’t completely level. I had to use some washers, which added about another half hour.

I think anyone who wants to take it easy should allow around two hours—better to have a bit of extra time than to rush and stress 🙂 Especially if you want to secure the unit properly for safety!

By the way, I had the standard version without extra shelves, and I imagine it would take longer with doors or drawers. Overall, I’m really happy with the result and would definitely encourage others to give it a try!

Exactly – when it comes to models with glass doors and additional drawers, in my experience the assembly time increases by at least 30-45 minutes.

I recommend a systematic approach:

1. Sort and check all parts immediately after unpacking – this helps avoid surprises later on.

2. Read the instructions step by step; don’t rush – many mistakes happen because people try to do things too quickly.

3. Focus on wall mounting! Securing the unit against tipping is crucial, as stability otherwise suffers considerably.

I can understand how important an estimate like this is for planning. I assembled my first BILLY two weeks ago and underestimated how much focus and physical effort it requires.

The actual assembly took me about 1 hour, but all the other steps – unpacking, sorting, checking if the shelf fits the space, then taking it apart again because it wasn’t quite right – took a total of 3 hours.

That was a challenge for me too. In my older apartment, the walls are quite fragile, so I chose special anchors that are a bit more expensive but offer greater security.

I found it important to take your time and above all, be patient. When you rush, mistakes happen easily, which only leads to frustration.

Is there anyone here who has already assembled the shelf with some extensions? Like combining multiple BILLY units or adding extra accessories? That’s what I’m interested in next. 🙂
