ᐅ How can I retrofit soft-close mechanisms on Ikea Brimnes doors?

liingmarHello everyone,
I’m considering how to retrofit an IKEA Brimnes wardrobe door with a soft-close function. The doors are currently installed without this feature but would greatly benefit from gentle and quiet closing.
I’m specifically interested in which soft-close hinges or damping systems are compatible, whether the original hinges need to be replaced, or if there are solutions that can be attached directly to the existing hinges. It’s also important to know how complex the installation is in practice and if any special tools are required.
Has anyone had experience retrofitting Brimnes doors? Are there any recommendations for brands or types of soft-close mechanisms that work well? I’d like to avoid completely replacing the doors since the wardrobe is otherwise in great condition.
Thank you in advance for your tips and advice!

To equip Brimnes doors with soft-close functionality, you can, for example, purchase soft-close adapters for the existing hinges.
These simply snap or screw onto the hinges without the need to replace the doors or hinges.
Common systems are quite affordable and easy to install; usually, all you need is a screwdriver.

I am particularly interested in which soft-close fittings or damping systems are compatible, whether the original hinges need to be replaced, or if there are solutions that can be directly attached to the existing hinges.Basically, there are two options for retrofitting soft-close on IKEA Brimnes doors:
- Replacing the original hinges with hinges that have an integrated soft-close function. These are often available from IKEA itself, for example the Metod hinges with soft-close, or from third-party suppliers. However, you need to pay close attention to exact fit, as the screw holes and finishes are predetermined.
- Attaching clip-on dampers (soft-close adapters) to the existing hinges. These small dampers either slide onto or screw onto the hinges and soften the closing motion.
Important for installation:
- Check the hinge type (110° or 155°), since the soft-close adapters are designed accordingly.
- Make sure the dampers do not collide with the door edge or obstruct closing.
- Depending on the system, it may be necessary to slightly adjust the door holes.
For the IKEA Brimnes, the second option is more common because the original hinges are often not easy to replace without dismantling the furniture frame. The mechanism used is relatively simple; a screwdriver and a steady hand are usually enough. There are also affordable soft-close kits marketed specifically for IKEA furniture.
You should consider whether you prefer the easier-to-install clip-on dampers or the more elegant but more involved complete hinge solution.
Additionally: sometimes it helps to adjust (slightly loosen or tighten) the existing hinges before retrofitting soft-close to optimize the function. If you have questions about the exact hinge type, feel free to provide the exact measurements or manufacturing year.

I especially recommend these small dampers called “soft-close adapters” from various manufacturers, which you simply attach to the hinge screws. Just make sure they are truly compatible with your hinges.
I upgraded my BRIMNES piece with this, and I’m happy every time I close the door. Simply brilliant and definitely a worthwhile investment! Good luck with your retrofit!
