Hello everyone, I am planning to remodel my Ikea Hemnes wardrobe soon, specifically to adjust the doors and the interior layout. Before I get started, I want to make sure I have the right tools on hand. My question is: What tools are ideally needed to professionally remodel an Ikea Hemnes wardrobe? I am interested in the basic toolset as well as any helpful specialized tools that could make the remodeling easier. Tips on tool brands or experiences with certain devices are also very welcome!

Are there any specific modification plans yet? Because depending on whether you are just changing doors, routing grooves, or making new drillings, the required tools can vary significantly. Otherwise, the essentials are: screwdrivers (Phillips and flathead), cordless drill/driver, possibly wood drill bits, and a set of hex keys (Allen wrenches). If you plan to drill new holes, a drill press for precise results should not be underestimated.

A screwdriver, cordless drill, drill with wood bits, sandpaper or a sander, and possibly a square for marking are usually sufficient.

Thanks in advance for the initial suggestions. Specifically, I want to upgrade the cabinet by replacing the door hinges with soft-close versions and reorganizing the interior fittings. Additionally, I plan to make adjustments to the back panel and shorten the cabinet by about 10cm (4 inches). Currently, the back panel is only slotted in; I am considering a more secure attachment using additional screws. Are there any special screws or tools you would recommend for this? Also, what is the best way to shorten the cabinet if I don’t have access to large power tools?

To shorten the pieces, a handsaw or a small jigsaw is sufficient. When installing soft-close hinges, you will need a cordless drill and the appropriate screwdriver bits. For the back panel, standard wood screws are adequate; don’t forget to pre-drill the holes!

Great project! 😊 For cutting, I recommend using a fine-toothed handsaw, which ensures clean cut edges. You can attach the back panel securely with a cordless screwdriver and thin screws. Also, remember edge protection if you expose any edges. Don’t stress, it will turn out really well!
