Hello everyone, some time ago I bought a KALLAX shelving unit from IKEA in the color black-brown. Now, one of the shelves has broken, and I want to order replacement parts or the shelving unit in exactly this color. Unfortunately, it seems IKEA no longer offers this old color—it is usually just referred to as black or white nowadays.

My question to you: Have you found a solution or an alternative to get this exact old color again or to replace it? I have considered whether it might be worth refinishing the shelf with paint or if there are any recommended third-party suppliers.

I look forward to your experiences and tips!

The issue with the old KALLAX colors is well known. IKEA has revised the color palette, so the exact old shades are hard to find.

One alternative is to repaint the shelf yourself. Make sure to use a wood or MDF paint with a satin finish to get as close to the original as possible.

There are also specialized suppliers who produce replicas or spare parts, but their quality varies.

Hello tiriga,

to give you a clearer overview of the best way to proceed, here is a brief guide:

1. Research at IKEA: It’s worth contacting customer service directly to ask about remaining stock or discontinued items, as IKEA sometimes still has old batches in storage.

2. Painting: If no original replacement is available, you can have the wood painted to match using a RAL or color tone matcher. It’s best to use a fine spray gun for this, applying a primer first, followed by the final coat.

3. Third-party suppliers: Some providers offer shelf parts made to KALLAX dimensions, but you should pay attention to reviews and material quality.

Common mistake: Regular wood paints from hardware stores often do not match well and result in uneven finishes.

I hope these steps help you!

I agree. Buy paint, sand it down, repaint. This way, you get the best color match.

In addition to the previous statements:

If you don’t feel confident doing a professional repaint yourself, it might make sense to take the component to a furniture restorer or a paint shop near you. They can often match the color very precisely.

Furthermore, it is advisable to always check the return options when purchasing from third-party sellers, in case the color does not match after all.

Thanks for the tip! I actually called IKEA again yesterday, but they said that this exact color is no longer in stock and not being produced anymore.

That sounds reasonable, but I’m afraid the costs might be quite high. Does anyone have experience with how much repainting a single shelf part might roughly cost?
