Hello everyone, I am currently looking into how stable the Kallax shelving unit from IKEA really is if you have a medium-sized or even large dog at home that jumps on it or occasionally leans against it. Specifically, I am interested in whether the shelving structure can withstand the strain caused by an active dog and if anyone can share from experience whether it makes sense to add extra reinforcements. Are there any known weak points that become more pronounced when pets are involved? It would also be helpful to get tips on how to prevent damage or tipping over as a precaution. Looking forward to your insights and experiences!

The Kallax is relatively sturdy, but for larger dogs and heavy leaning, I would recommend securing it to the wall. Without additional support, it can tip over.

This is an important point, but I think it’s also necessary to differentiate: the load capacity strongly depends on the filling and anchoring. If the shelf is barely loaded, its resistance to tipping is generally lower. It remains uncertain whether the material itself – especially the joints – will be damaged over time by claw or impact stresses. So far, I am lacking reliable long-term observations on this.

So for us, the Kallax with a dog looks just as good as the famous Teflon frying pan – almost indestructible 😉 Okay, joking aside: obviously, if your dog runs around and scratches or jumps on the side, I would definitely recommend securing the shelf to the wall. This provides safety and you don’t have to worry about it being unstable. One tip: put the grid inserts and boxes in, and it becomes firm and stable.

Attach the shelf to the wall, add padding or edge protection, and be careful not to overload it. Period.

The stability of the Kallax shelving unit when used around dogs depends on several technical factors. First, wall mounting is essential since the shelf is designed as a standing unit rather than being balanced on the floor. If a dog weighing about 20-30 kg (44-66 lbs) jumps on it, localized forces act on the unit, which can affect its stability.

Additionally, I recommend reinforcing the back with cross braces or diagonal supports, as this significantly improves the already solid construction and distributes the load across multiple elements. It is also important that the shelves fit securely and firmly, as loose shelves can rattle and contribute to the unit tipping over.

In practice, it has proven effective to avoid overloading the top section while keeping the lower compartments clear to provide a movement space for the dog. This helps keep the bottom of the unit heavy and stable.

Are there any details about your dog’s weight and how intensely it will interact with the shelving? This information would help make the assessment more precise.
