ᐅ Kallax and Dogs – How Stable Is It Really?

Hello everyone, I am currently looking into how stable the Kallax shelving unit from IKEA really is if you have a medium-sized or even large dog at home that jumps on it or occasionally leans against it. Specifically, I am interested in whether the shelving structure can withstand the strain caused by an active dog and if anyone can share from experience whether it makes sense to add extra reinforcements. Are there any known weak points that become more pronounced when pets are involved? It would also be helpful to get tips on how to prevent damage or tipping over as a precaution. Looking forward to your insights and experiences!

Are there any details about your dog’s weight and how much stress it will put on the shelving?

Thank you for the detailed post! My dog weighs about 24 kg (53 lbs) and is quite lively, especially when he jumps up or leans against the Kallax corner out of excitement, for example when someone walks by. The shelving will be subjected to occasional small jumps and leaning but won’t be under continuous heavy load. So far, I haven’t anchored it to the wall—just the standard Kallax with 4x4 compartments. That’s why I’m leaning towards adding grooves or braces. Has anyone had experience with DIY reinforcement? Are there simple, practical solutions that don’t require much effort?

In your situation, a combination of wall mounting and additional reinforcements is definitely advisable. The Kallax construction is based on MDF panels with a thin fiberboard acting as a connector – this is stable for normal use, but impact or pressure loads from a dog can cause cracks over time.

My recommendation:
1. Use wall anchors to secure the shelf.
2. Attach additional crossbars made of sturdy wood on the back, ideally with brackets, to minimize lateral movement.
3. Consider fitting the feet with anti-slip pads to reduce wobbling.

These measures require little effort and significantly improve stability.

Hey, I simply placed some nice fabric storage boxes in the compartments, which not only helped organize things but also improved stability. The dog doesn’t have any footholds on the shelf and doesn’t seem tempted to jump on it, maybe because of the boxes 🙂

Wall mounting is, of course, even better if you want to be on the safe side. You can actually secure the Kallax to the wall quite easily with self-adhesive hooks – no drilling required. That really helped us a lot.

I’m pretty relaxed about this: Kallax + dog = teamwork 🤜🤛! Of course, if your dog is a little Hulk, I’d be cautious too, but for normal jumps, the shelf usually holds up just fine.

I simply screwed a thin plywood panel to the back of my Kallax for reinforcement and attached the whole thing to the wall using brackets. It has held up for years, and my dog has never damaged it. A one-time effort that makes everyday life easier – and saves your nerves too! 😉
