Hello everyone, I am currently planning to purchase and assemble Ikea Metod kitchen cabinets and would like to ask in this forum about common mistakes that often occur during assembly and how to avoid them. I am particularly interested in challenges related to attaching the drawer slides, correctly aligning the cabinets, and installing the panels, as I have heard these areas frequently cause issues. Are there any specific tips or methods from your own experience that you would recommend to prevent time-consuming errors or damage during assembly? Thanks in advance for your support!

Hey Baba34, I actually had some uncertainties with my Metod cabinet assemblies, especially when it came to alignment.

I underestimated that back then, which caused slight wobbling. My advice: always assemble all parts loosely first and check if everything fits before fully tightening the screws! And it’s better to build with a second person, as it makes alignment much easier. Don’t worry, mistakes happen to everyone, but a bit of patience will help avoid frustration.

To avoid common mistakes when assembling Ikea Metod cabinets, I recommend the following structured approach:

- Prepare the workspace adequately: ensure there is enough space and have the appropriate tools ready
- Carefully follow the assembly instructions step by step, paying special attention to the correct positioning of drawer runners
- Do not fully tighten screws immediately; initially, tighten them only lightly for adjustment
- Use a plumb line or spirit level to align the cabinets properly before final fixing
- Install panels with even pressure to prevent stress and damage

These points are based on various professional installation guidelines and effectively minimize errors.

I would like to add some technical details to the topic, as the Metod cabinets have specific features that must be carefully considered:

First: The drawer slides have small plastic brackets that can break if installed incorrectly. It is important to use only the designated screw type and avoid over-tightening.

Second: Aligning the cabinets is best done in two steps. First, level the base plate or plinth precisely, then mount the individual units onto it step by step. A weak or unevenly adjusted base will cause problems with the doors later on.

Third: When installing the cover panels, be sure to use the spacers to prevent stress. Especially with large fronts, panels can warp otherwise, which looks unattractive and is difficult to fix.

Important: What are your specific conditions? Floor type, ceiling height? These factors often influence the required approach.

That sounds logical and helpful.

@Laukau5: Thanks for asking, the floor is a smooth tiled surface, and the ceiling height is about 2.60 m (8 ft 6 in). I will pay close attention to the plinth height.

What I am still unsure about is how to handle the drawer sides, as there are several options with Metod (Metod drawers with or without soft-close). Do you need to be particularly careful with the small parts here? And how can you avoid creating stress when inserting the drawers that could later affect their function?

Good question, Baba34!

Here is a simple step-by-step guide on how to avoid common mistakes when assembling Metod cabinets with drawer slides:

- Preparation: Sort and lay out all parts. Make sure to check if the soft-close feature is included, as the drawer slides differ accordingly.
- Attaching the drawer sides: Tighten the screws only lightly, so you can still make fine adjustments later.
- Installing the slides inside the cabinet sides: Ensure the slides are fully engaged and mounted parallel—this is where small errors often happen. Avoid screwing them in too deeply, as this can cause jamming.
- Inserting the drawer: Slide it in gently and straight, without forcing it, to prevent damage to the slides.
- Adjusting: Many Metod drawers have small adjustment screws on the sides to fine-tune depth and height. Use these carefully to ensure smooth operation.

In summary: Careful preparation combined with loose assembly and tightening only at the very end provides good flexibility. Another common source of errors is using the wrong screws or mixing up parts, so avoid this by checking everything beforehand.
