Hello everyone,
I recently acquired several pieces of furniture from IKEA, specifically from the Malm series, and to be honest, I’m a bit disappointed because some water stains have already appeared on the surface. I know the surface is melamine-coated, but these water-like stains seem quite stubborn and noticeably affect the appearance.
I am therefore very interested in effective ways to prevent water stains on Malm furniture. I’m not only asking about avoiding water on the surface itself, but also tips for care and protection to prevent such stains from forming in the first place.
Does anyone have personal experience or know of effective tricks? How do you specifically handle this issue in daily life, for example with glasses, potted plants, or cleaning products?
Thanks in advance for your help!

Do not use aggressive cleaning agents, as they can damage the coating. Thanks, that’s a very good point I hadn’t considered before. In my frustration, I’ve often reached for strong glass cleaners. Sounds like that’s counterproductive.
What exactly are specialized melamine surface care products? I’m only familiar with regular furniture cleaners, so maybe I’m misinformed. Are there any well-tested recommendations or brands?
The idea of using plastic film also sounds interesting, even though I don’t find the appearance ideal. Still worth considering.
Hello datu32,
I completely understand your concerns. To protect your Malm furniture, I recommend using only mild cleaning products specifically designed for melamine-coated surfaces. This will preserve the protective layer and help prevent stains.
Additionally, regular gentle cleaning with a slightly damp cloth without harsh chemicals is ideal. For example, I use a mild all-purpose cleaner concentrate based on natural ingredients and then wipe it dry with a clean cloth.
These include products often marketed as "melamine surface care" or "melamine-friendly cleaners." They are usually polishes or special protective treatments that can be applied gently and then buffed.
As mentioned before, the plastic film might look distracting but it works very well against water spots, especially from glasses.

Additional information:
The melamine-coated surface is resistant to water as long as it is not damaged. Water stains usually occur where moisture remains for a longer time and may contain dust particles that leave marks when dried.
Regular cleaning with distilled water or a slightly damp microfiber cloth can help.
To prevent damage, coasters are the best protection as they prevent direct contact with moisture. Plastic covers or films are more suitable for heavy use or if there are children in the household.

For example, I use a mild, natural-based all-purpose cleaner concentrate and then wipe down with a dry cloth. Thanks, that sounds like a good, practical solution. I have one more question about this: Are there any specific ingredients to avoid? I’ve occasionally read that alcohol or ammonia can damage the coating—is that correct?

dust particles are present in the water, which can leave marks when it dries. Then I’ll probably make sure the surfaces are clean before removing moisture as well, that makes sense.
In addition to the points mentioned:
It is important to note that the melamine coating on Malm furniture is durable but not invulnerable. It is strongly recommended to avoid using highly alkaline or aggressive cleaning agents, as well as abrasive cleaners or cloths that could mechanically damage the surface.
If water stains are already visible, products containing isopropyl alcohol can help gently blot them. Always use a soft cloth and immediately dry the area afterward.
Additionally, I recommend applying a protective polish regularly that is specifically designed for melamine-coated surfaces. This can provide an extra barrier against moisture.
